Sen. Tom Udall won't seek reelection in 2020

Source: Politico

By JAMES ARKIN 03/25/2019 11:54 AM EDT

New Mexico Democratic Sen. Tom Udall announced that he will not seek reelection in 2020, forgoing the chance for a third term.

"The worst thing anyone in public office can do is believe the office belongs to them, rather than to the people they represent,” the 70-year-old Udall said in a statement on Monday. “That’s why I’m announcing today that I won’t be seeking re-election next year.”

Sen Udall has been exemplary. I understand his reasoning, but it's still sad to lose him. It's a good thing New Mexico is BLUE, which means we have an excellent chance to find someone really good to take his place.

Trump lost the state by 8%. That's less than Romney and McCain, but there isn't much risk of losing statewide... and I can't even think of who the Republicans have. It's a very thin bench

In this climate, NM is a pretty safe blue state.

Unless there's some beloved Republican available in that state....
