Betsy DeVos: Deep cuts to Special Olympics, student programs are warranted
Source: The Detroit Free Press
WASHINGTON Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Tuesday defended deep cuts to programs meant to help students and others, including eliminating $18 million to support Special Olympics, while urging Congress to spend millions more on charter schools.
"We are not doing our children any favors when we borrow from their future in order to invest in systems and policies that are not yielding better results," DeVos said in prepared testimony before a House subcommittee considering the Department of Education's budget request for the next fiscal year.
It was the first time that DeVos, a wealthy former Michigan Republican Party chairwoman and school choice advocate, had been called before a Democratic-led panel in the U.S. House to explain President Donald Trump's spending priorities.
While proposing to add $60 million more to charter school funding and create a tax credit for individual and companies that donate to scholarships for private schools, DeVos's budget proposal would still cut more than $7 billion from the Education Department, about 10 percent of its current budget.

(15,557 posts)Maybe that's a sad truth we're going to have to accept. There are many of us who aren't cruel and uncaring, but our country as a whole has devolved in my lifetime to people mostly just not caring about others.

(22,758 posts)every time I hear someone say "we're better than this" I cringe obviously we are not... yes, there are many good people here in the United States and we are so fortunate because of that, but... if we were better than what we are living through, it wouldn't be happening

(15,557 posts)How can anyone say we're better than this when we allow children to be shot in their classrooms and nothing is done. Or we allow children to be separated from their mothers and lock them in cages while we tsk, tsk and then go on with our lives and wait for the next gruesome headlines?
No, we're not better than anything. In fact, there are a lot of countries out there who are looking at us like an example of what not to become.
We have certainly lost our way.

(9,287 posts)Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster.
External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow was more intent upon its purpose, no pelting rain less open to entreaty. Foul weather didn't know where to have him.
A Christmas Carol.

Meanwhile, in a kinder, gentler world not so long ago:
Michelle Obama kicks off Special Olympics
First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles on Saturday, welcoming thousands of intellectually disabled athletes.
"To all of our athletes, I just want you to know that all those people won't just be cheering for you, they're going to be learning from you," the first lady told the cheering crowd during the opening ceremony. "You're filling us with so much hope. And you're uniting us in a way that nothing else can."
The roughly 6,500 athletes traveled to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from 165 countries.
"I want you all to know that my husband and I, we are so proud of all of you, so incredibly proud of you," Michelle Obama said. "And we love you all from the bottom of our hearts."

Holy shit how uncompassionate can one person be. She has hers so screw everyone else as long as she makes another billion off of her holier than thou charter schools. I don't really believe in hell but at the same time I wouldn't want to spend a second in her supposed heaven. Jesus h. Sorry but this really pisses me off. Garbage piece of shit waste of space. I would take 10 million special Olympic kids any day of the week versus her and her putrid family. Nothing good has ever come from her family. They can all go fuck themselves. Utter filth.
