Target raises hourly minimum wage to $13, topping Walmart's $11
Source: Reuters
Target will raise its U.S. minimum wage to $13 an hour in June, from $12, increasing its payroll costs and putting new pressure on rival Walmart Inc to follow suit, given a labor market that is among the tightest in half a century.
Minneapolis-based Target, the eight largest U.S. retailer by sales and fifth largest by employee count, runs 1,845 stores and employs more than 300,000 workers in the United States. The discount chain is investing billions of dollars to improve its supply chain, expand online sales and improve delivery of merchandise to shoppers' homes.
Target previously raised minimum hourly pay to $12 in March 2018 from $11. In 2017, Target, said it was committed to raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour by end of 2020. The wage increase will affect "tens of thousands" of employees, a Target spokeswoman said.
Retailers have been finding it tougher to attract workers, with U.S. unemployment at its lowest level in nearly 50 years, while there has been growing political pressure on companies to pay workers a fair living wage.

(25,111 posts)$13.00 an hour, you would need extra income. I think many Target employees live with others.

(15,475 posts)I live in NYC, and I'd be loaded with $40 and hour. $1,600 a week is good money. How high is the rent there? Can't they travel an hour or two a day for lower rent like we to here?

(7,412 posts)I make $58 an hour and my rent is $2000 a month for a mediocre 600 sq ft one bedroom apartment built in the 70's. I could get a roommate and a two bedroom and maybe save $500-700 a month but its not worth it to have to deal another person. It is gated and I have a parking spot inside so I don't have to deal with all the car break-ins and dents and dings from street parking so I'm thankful for that.

(1,568 posts)It's insane for me to think of paying $2k/mo for a 600sq ft apartment. $2k/mo where I am at would get a large "luxury" apartment in a prime spot downtown or very close to downtown.

Our local Target store is so much nicer and CLEANER and well-stocked compared to Walmart. Also, the employees are much more helpful and courteous than Walmart employees.

I was at a retail store and talked with a friendly cashier a couple of days later I was in another chain store and there was the same cashier, I asked if she changed jobs and she said no she has two jobs so she can work over 40 hours in order to pay her rent and have money for extras.

(2,484 posts)Retail is entry-level, so part-time opportunities are important to keep available for students, single parents, interns, etc. But there has to be a compromise for those who are in retail as a single-source income, that I am sure of.

(7,412 posts)I can't stand the one near me because they rarely have more than one or two registers open and the Safeway's are no better.
Many times my closest Target has 1 "regular" lane open at night, as they try to funnel everybody toward the 4 self checkout kiosks. I get it if you're buying a bottle of water or something. Still, I wish people would refuse to use those gd things. They're giving the company free labor, and probably ensuring that fewer and fewer "regular" lanes will be open in the future.

Maybe it's just me, but even though Target is a "discount" store, I've always considered it a step above Wal-Mart. Target always seems to have merchandise that's a little better quality than Wal-Mart.
