Illinois Proposes Banning Trump From Its 2020 Ballot Unless He Releases His Tax Returns

After a full presidential campaign and two years of his presidency, Trump has still refused to release his tax returns. Some states are looking to change that. For example, Illinois proposed banning Trump from the 2020 ballot if he doesn't release his tax returns by then. On Thursday, the state Senate considered the bill and there was serious support for it.
The state Senate voted 36-19 in favor of the new bill, which will now move to the House for a vote, according to NPR. In Illinois, the House, like the Senate, is majority Democrat.
Sen. Tony Munoz, a state senator who sponsored the legislation, didn't mention Trump's name once during the speech he gave on the Senate floor on Thursday in support of the bill, per NPR. Munoz said in part,
If you want to run for vice president or president of the United States, hey, what's wrong with providing your tax returns for the past five years? If you've got nothing to hide, you shouldn't worry about anything. That's how I see it.

(13,921 posts)to set rules for how to run presidential elections within their borders.
Be interesting to have it hit the courts and be argued out. I suspect the courts will end up siding with your POV, but I can see both arguments.

I get it too, imagine if Mississippi had taken Obama off the ballot until he released "the long form".

(14,176 posts)Would there be an outcry, of course. But we expect that every time now don't we? If this does't go ahead then they'd pick something else to go ballistic about. And if they couldn't find anything they'd make some shit up.
I think its brilliant because how do you argue against it? It targets everyone, both candidates from both parties. They could, and would, scream all day long about it on Fox, but they'd not be able to spin it as completely against Republicans.
And the ABB (anybody but Bernie) crowd would love it.

(13,582 posts)I though those fuckhead republicans were all about states rights - so why would anyone object if a state adds release of taxes to their requirements for being listed on a ballot?

(14,176 posts)Just add it to other requirements. I'm sure there is some list. Like being born in America, and not being a convicted criminal for instance. (yet). It is not something that outrageous.

(6,011 posts)The last seven Presidential elections in IL have gone to Dems.
Before that, the Bush race I mentioned. Reagan twice, and Nixon twice.
Jimmy Carter lost Illinois by a couple of points.
There are Red areas here in IL, but it's now solidly Blue.

(3,176 posts)...to state Sen. Tony Munoz for demonstrating some much needed creative Dem thinking...
...this president incites violence and hate...no need for someone exhibiting what would otherwise be criminal behavior for anyone else, to be on an American ballot...
