Kansas City Police Chief Says Officers Who Brutally Beat Black Motorist Were Doing What They Were 'Trained' To Do
Sugar Creek Police Chief Chris Soule said the officers "did what they were trained to do."

The police chief of Sugar Creek, a Kansas City suburb, is defending his officers after harrowing bodycam footage was released on Tuesday showing two officers break a man's car window, drag him to the ground and kneel on his neck as they arrest him.

Sugar Creek Police Chief Chris Soule told The Kansas City Star that his officers "did what they were trained to do" when they began beating and hogtying Aaron Fletcher on Monday.

"I understand where they think it looks like excessive force," Soule later told Kansas City's Fox4 News. "But we only use the force necessary to gain compliance."

. . .

Fletcher was almost hogtied and eventually was dragged into the back of a police car. Police Chief Soule, who can be seen in the video, tried to stop Fletcher's neighbors from filming the beating and forced them to go back into their house.

shit happens routinely. I know some police officers and most are Trump humping, former military right wingers. It's a different breed today, and most are much more militaristic than previous generations. Not a good mix as we approach a divide of no return. I wish we could return to a time when human life was more respected.

Was there such a time? In my younger days, during the Sixties, police brutality was a major issue. College students of all races were routinely harassed. I used to dread getting pulled over, because you never knew what the cop was going to do. Any excuse was offered for terrorizing the driver. We called the cops "pigs" then, too.

And not just the police engaged in this behavior. Kent State occurred in 1970.

Basically, human rights has always been an issue in our society.

Police Brutality Against Black Kansas City Man Caught on Video

By Gillian Wilcox, Staff Attorney, ACLU of Missouri
OCTOBER 12, 2018 | 4:45 PM

Black people in Missouri are disproportionately stopped or harassed by police. Twenty years of collected data shows Black drivers are stopped at a rate 85 percent higher than white drivers. And too many police departments across the state regularly use disproportionate force in dealing with minority individuals.

Missouri offers yet another example. Josh Bills, a Black man living in Kansas City, found himself on the receiving end of just this kind of police misconduct.

In December 2013, walking blocks from his home, Bills was approached by five officers who surrounded him. He greeted the officers calmly. He stood with his hands down to his sides at a 45-degree angle. He did not act aggressively.

The police stopped him because of a call about a “Black man, black clothing.” Then the encounter went south — a scene emblematic of racialized policing that is all too familiar. Despite being cooperative with the officers, Officer Jordan Nelson, without warning, grabbed one of Bills’ arms and violently kicked his legs out from under him, smashing his face into the concrete.

Saying they "did what they were trained to do" is a confession on the department's part, not an exoneration of the officers...

Sugar Creek is a city in Clay and Jackson counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 3,345 at the 2010 census. The headline implies that the officers were from Kansas City MO. In reality, this happened in a very small town near Kansas City Mo not in Kansas City Mo.
...Therefore, the officers were from Sugar Creek Mo. and not from Kansas City Mo.... Also, the police chief is the Sugar Creek Police Chief.
.....The original headline is not clear.

Sugar Creek is a tiny town east of Kansas City, with all their own city services. It used to be home to a large oil refinery.

What did you have to hide, huh? Maybe it's "They are trained to hit nerve spots. It was in a soft spot of the leg, which is a nerve that will help gain compliance" - ie the intentional infliction of pain. On someone who has outstanding traffic violations and driving without a license. Who was given about 1 second to get out of the car before they smashed the window, dragged him through the broken glass and beat him with a baton.

"Most people stop when a police car gets behind them. They don't drive several, several blocks and they don't have their friend recording on the front porch when the police arrive."

Well, Chief, driving so that his beating could be filmed seems like a wise choice to me. I'd advise anyone in Sugar Creek to avoid being cornered by the dangerous gang of thugs lead by Sproule without witnesses and a recording.

The guy was very sure the cops would behave badly. Like he knew what to expect.

And what's with the giant fatso cop blocking the view from the civilian's porch?
