Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.

Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral.

A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.

Tourists stunned as Notre-Dame cathedral statues fly above Paris

Date created : 12/04/2019 - 11:53

Sixteen bronze statues briefly took to the skies over Paris after they were removed from the Notre-Dame cathedral to undergo restoration work.

Tourists at the world-famous landmark were left stunned on Thursday as the statues -- representing the 12 apostles and the four evangelists from the New Testament -- were lifted off the spire of the cathedral by crane.
....

Built between the years 1163 and 1345, Notre-Dame is one of the most popular tourist sites in Paris, drawing around 13 million people every year.

Its spire, like the rest of the gothic edifice, is undergoing a 11-million-euro ($12.4-million) overhaul financed by the French state to repair damage inflicted by time, pollution and the weather.

Notre-Dame blaze: Flying water tankers 'could lead to collapse'

Date created : 15/04/2019 - 23:14Latest update : 16/04/2019 - 00:26

The use of flying water tankers to extinguish the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral is not an option, French officials said on Monday night. The weight of the water could cause the entire structure to collapse.

US President Donald Trump on Monday called the blaze engulfing Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris "horrible" and suggested the deployment of flying water tankers, before being told by French authorities that this wouldn't work.

"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!" Trump tweeted

Not an option

Following Trump's tweet, the French civil protection service responded that the one thing it was not contemplating was using aerial tankers, which dump enormously heavy loads of water, usually on wildfires.

"All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircraft which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral."

Every centimeter of such historic buildings have been surveyed and recorded in case of just such an eventuality. It may take decades, but it will eventually return. (Also, keep in mind that it has been damaged and rebuilt many times over the centuries. In fact, the spire that just fell in is only about 170 years old.) The major devastation will be the loss of precious art from the interior. Pretty much all the stained glass will be gone as well; they can create replacements, but there will likely always be a “Colonial Williamsburg” feel to them – obviously modern-day versions of lost old art.

but on Gothic cathedrals most of the weight of the building is not structurally carried by the walls but by the flying buttresses on the outside. Still any building that old and such an ambitious structure build at that early a stage of architecture will have serious masonry problems. Many European cathedrals after WWII were able to be restored. Cologne was bombed 16 times. But not as old as Notre Dame, much of which however was extensively rebuilt in the 19th C.

The fire chief in Paris says it’s unclear if city firefighters will be able to keep a fire at Notre Dame from spreading and causing more destruction.

Fire Chief Jean-Claude Gallet said outside the iconic cathedral as his crews battled the blaze from both the exterior and interior: “We are not sure we are capable of stopping the spreading” to Notre Dame’s second tower and belfry.

Gallet said: “If it collapses, you can imagine how important the damage will be.”

Flames already have reached one of Notre Dame’s towers and brought down the church spire that extended 96-meters-high (315-feet.

Notre-Dame of Paris 'saved' after fire destroys steeple

16 Apr 2019

French firefighters Monday won an hours-long battle to save the main structure of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, after a colossal fire caused the spire of the historic edifice to crash to the ground and wiped out centuries of heritage.

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed that "we will rebuild" Notre-Dame and expressed relief that "the worst had been avoided" in a fire that risked bringing the entire edifice down.

The fire destroyed the roof of the 850-year-old UNESCO world heritage landmark, whose spectacular Gothic spire collapsed before the eyes of horrified onlookers on a previously pristine early spring evening.

Paris fire brigade chief Jean-Claude Gallet said "we can consider that the main structure of Notre-Dame has been saved and preserved" as well as the two towers.

95. It had been replaced once already it seems . . .

from wikipedia:

The original spire was constructed in the 13th century, probably between 1220 and 1230. It was battered, weakened and bent by the wind over five centuries, and finally was removed in 1786. During the 19th century restoration, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc decided to recreate it, making a new version of oak covered with lead.

Still a shame though. And the roof had just been replaced in 2014. On the bright side, it wasn't a terror attack, which would be completely devastating.

98. Well, most of that wood was in the attic

and the vaulted ceilings under them survived, except where the spire fell through. So it was probably just a matter of time before all that wood was replaced anyway, for just this reason.

Still, it's a heartbreak, for sure.

My second visit to Paris, in the company of five other writers and poets. We rose early on Sunday morning to catch the plainsong Mass at Notre Dame. A being who looked and sounded like an angel sang the Mass.

I am an atheist, but I count that Sunday morning, in the company of my dearest friends, as a spiritual highlight of my life.

No words.

the people of Paris and the world. (Paris is our favorite city other than San Francisco, where we live.) One of her FB "friends" felt compelled to respond that what's happening at the Texas border is much worse, and Notre Dame is "only" a building, so it can be rebuilt.

My older daughter's life is devoted to advancing the rights of domestic workers (most of them immigrants, documented and not) and people with disabilities... and in helping elect people (Democrats) and support policies that will end the current evil situation at the border and prevent similar situations in the future. She deleted the "friend's" comment.

It seems such a failure of imagination... or heart ... or something... to be unable to understand (at all) the impact of the loss of such a beloved, glorious, iconic treasure to the people of Paris-- and to the rest of us-- and also to fail to understand that this feeling of devastating loss doesn't diminish our concerns about other current events.

At any rate, I didn't wake up today worried that Notre Dame would be burned out of existence. That was inconceivable. We stayed quite close to Notre Dame on our 2017 (spring) trip, in a lively neighborhood on the Left Bank. This was our first family trip in years, and the first time our two youngest kids had been to Paris. It was such a great (and needed!) escape from the shit-show unfolding back home. I just want to rewind this day... and replay with the devastating and unbelievable loss part edited out. Can't stop crying...

This is why aircrafts can’t be used. Appalled by people criticising the fire brigade, as men are risking their life for a monument @PompiersParis deserves our greatest respect #Notredame

Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible #NotreDame fire under control. All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.

Horrifying! Studied the art in there in college, as well as, the art that is the building itself. The history is incredible.

Macron says they will rebuild, but you can't replace parts of a 13th century building. It is a great loss for the world.
