Ukraine election: Comedian Zelensky 'wins presidency by landslide'

Source: BBC

Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelensky has won a run-off election to become the country's next president by a landslide, exit polls suggest.

The polls give him more than 70% support. He dominated the first round of voting three weeks ago when 39 candidates were on the ticket.

Mr Zelensky challenged incumbent president Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Poroshenko has admitted defeat but told supporters gathered in Kiev that he will not leave politics.

A comic actor with no experience in politics, who avoided taking any policy position at all. What a leap in the dark. OK, he can't be as bad a person as Trump, but who knows how he'll handle the job?

He was a presidential candidate and now he is president. I didn't notice Trump's name preceded by "TV reality show star" in every reference to him during the campaign.

The fact he was ever legitimized by the media will be one of the biggest blows this country has experienced in its history.

Actually, is there any chance he's actually the President of Ukraine, right now?

Can we really rule it out?

If he peeled off his mask at the inauguration, would anyone be THAT surprised?

If these weren’t such dangerous times, I’d pull out the popcorn. Instead, wishing him well battling poverty and corruption.

Desperation is bad counsel, and desperate voters sometimes reach for the most irreverent candidates, hoping that actually means something.

That said, All the Best to Mr. Zelensky. He's got his job cut out for him.

...Poroshenko was corrupt, however, if he just "treads water" it will be a success.

Desperation often leads to poor choices, Putin could very well be smiling again.
