Lawsuit: Sheriff Arpaio’s Jail Denied Medicine To Diabetic Inmate, Causing her Death

Last edited Fri Sep 14, 2012, 07:34 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Think Progress

The family of a woman who died after her custody at Maricopa County Jail is suing the office of the infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio, alleging authorities neglected her and deprived her of necessary medications for days, allowing her to slip into a diabetic coma.

The local ABC affiliate reports on the circumstances that led to Deborah Braillard’s death, after she was detained for a minor drug possession charge:

Witnesses said that Deborah was constantly moaning and crying out in pain, asking for help, repeatedly vomiting, defecating on herself and having seizures.
“She would shake. Her body would stiffen up,” said Tamela Harper, an inmate in the jail with Braillard. “They never did anything to help her.”

Inmates said they begged officers to do something.
“They were telling everyone, ‘There’s nothing we can do about it. This is jail. Get over it,”’ Harper said.
Harper added that officers said Braillard was “kicking drugs” and that she was “getting what she deserved.”

What a vile man, and what a vile system he runs. He makes the legendary Sheriff of Nottingham look like Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry.

I hope the woman's family wins big. And that Arpaio can be held liable for her death.

Maricopa county is already paying 50 million dollars to settle hundreds of lawsuits directly caused by Joe Arpaio yet they keep reelecting him over and over.

was that possibly, Arpaio could be charged with either negligent homicide or depraved indifference to human life.

Color me cynical; I'm not holding my breath, but if I read one fine day that Arpaio had been charged with either of those two charges, I'd be happy. I'd be ecstatic if he were to be found guilty of either charge!

Yes, the wrongful death suits get reported in the media, but the majority attitude down there is "They broke the law, so they got what they deserved, and the families filing the lawsuits are a bunch of grubby welfare queens"

The crazies run Maricopa County, and they would bring back public stockades, floggings, and lynchings if they could get away with it

I'm so glad I don't live there anymore--the good people of Maricopa County are beating their heads against the desert winds; Phoenix gets more rain than human decency.

got out of there. Sounds like a case where the inmates took over the asylum (no disrespect to those with mental illnesses).

Maybe someday, I'll run for President. My first act will be to declare Maricopa County no longer a part of the USA - I'm selling it to Mexico. Lock, stock and barrel.

I lived in Phoenix for a few years. Met some very nice people. But the electorate of Maricopa county is just not civilized. Most citizens would not tolerate the cruelty of the Tent City jail. They have chain gangs, and people volunteer for them, just to get away from Tent City for a few hours.

Joe Arpaio is a mean and vindictive asshole, but he has the support of the reprobates that vote for him. Some officials from some of the cities have tried to get him out. But they are always defeated by the desert rats.

But don't forget that vile people are the ones that keep him in office...he can't elect himself. The people of Maricopa County know what he does and they see how he humiliates the inmates...the jail has been responsible for other deaths in the past, but the vile people of Maricopa County keep backing him up!

Why you ask? Because the vile people of Maricopa County are as vile and evil as this piece of shit they keep putting into office every election cycle...and if anyone from Maricopa County reads this, then your not part of the evil...because the vile people that support Arpaio and his personal Gestapo, wouldn't be reading this post!!!

There are three jails. 4th Ave which has the tents which sentenced go to. Lower Buckeye & Durango.

I spent a couple weeks there myself but as un-sentenced and the jails aren't tough, they're inefficient. It amazed me how things that should be simple are horribly mismanaged.

When I went to the nurse's office the detention officer there would talk to someone that was sick and mentioned that she never misses work when she's sick. Or a guy suffering w/ stomach cramps was told, "I don't act like that when I have my period". What is the point in working in a nurse's office if you're just going to minimize others' ailments?

On edit - Estrella it was. Haven't heard of it. There is also the Towers. Durango is minimum, LBJ is medium, and 4th Ave is Max for unsentenced. Protective custody is housed in the towers. Estrella must be a Women's jail.

I'd like to see him one of those refrigerated holding tanks waiting for court. See, they wake you up at 2am then get you to the court tower at 4am. Then they put you in a freezing ass holding tank for at-least 4 hours. It makes no sense why they're that cold. When you get upstairs to the holding tanks outside the court room you're scheduled to appear they're reasonable so it isn't like they don't have the means.
