'Kai The Hitchhiker' Murder Trial: Internet Sensation Found Guilty In Beating Death

A 30-year-old man, who became an internet sensation in 2013 as “Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker,” was found guilty Wednesday in the beating death of a New Jersey attorney. Homeless drifter Caleb “Kai” McGillvary was convicted of first-degree murder for killing a 73-year-old Joseph Galfy.

McGillvary became a viral star in February 2013 when a reporter in Fresno, California, interviewed him after he saved a person from a would-be attacker while hitchhiking. The fatal beating occurred just three months after McGillvary became a viral sensation.

"Due to not being able to fully present his case, Kai has been found guilty of murder. We will be filing an appeal as soon as possible and will keep you updated," a post on Kai the Hitchhiker Legal Support Page on Facebook read.

McGillvary was in jail since the attack and was awaiting trial since he was arrested in New Jersey in 2013, according to NJ.com.

If he's hitchhiking and drifting, he was likely carrying a camping hatchet. forgotmylogin Apr 2019 #8

I thought I read something a few years back that he was trying to use a variation of the gay panic defense for the killing (might have been a different case)...

Have to admit, the whole story of him being a "hero" seemed a little weird to begin with...I mean whose first instinct is to start hitting another person with a HATCHET? Pulling him off? Punching him to get him to release the woman? Hell even kicking him or something else to break up the attack....but a HATCHET?

Seems like he is at the end of a long road towards eventual conviction and incarceration. Nice face ink too...sure fire winning move there.

"Survival hatchets" are multi-use and fit in a backpack - handy for people on multi-day hikes or camping trips.

Not saying that excuses any crime, but I certainly would want to carry one of these for camping. I can't imagine anyone who would hitchhike extensively and not carry some kind of potential defense weapon, especially if it has multiple uses.

My first thought was more "how would I get someone off of a woman if they grabbed them in front of me" and my thoughts were more along the line of breaking them apart instead of smashing a human with an axe...but then again, I have never roamed free camping and hitching across country either, so not a familiar mindset at all for me.
