Coast Guard Gets New Memorial to Fallen Enlisted Personnel

Source: Military.com

The Coast Guard's Cape May Training Center is getting a new monument: the service's only memorial dedicated to enlisted men and women who have died in the line of duty.

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz will join the center's commanding officer, Capt. Owen Gibbons, in dedicating the Coast Guard Enlisted Memorial on Saturday in New Jersey.

The memorial -- three granite walls etched with the names of 1,500 service members, centered around a pyramid topped with a bronze flame -- is located on the training center's parade field.

Schultz said the service members on the monument are "forever woven into the fabric of Coast Guard history."

The Coasties were great seamen and would run blockade for submarines running across Block Island Sound. As the submarines left the Thames River and raced for the 100-fathom curve so we could dive and hide, the Soviet fishing trawlers, bristling with radio antennas, would try to cut us off and drop trawl nets in front of the subs hoping for an entanglement and an international incident.

The CG cutter would swerve in between the subs and trawlers, and after making for some close calls for collision, slow them commies down. It was fun watching the CG in action back in the day of the 3 mile limit.

Congratulations on the well deserved new monument Coast Guard.

THE best S A R teams ever.

If you can hover a chopper 40' over the North Sea in February, drop divers in the water, retrieve a sick sailor off a submarine and then medevac him to safety, YOU are the BEST.

Semper Fortis, USCG.
