Obama Notifies Congress of Troops Deployed to Libya and Yemen

President Obama has taken the formal step of notifying Congress that he has deployed troops “equipped for combat” to Libya and Yemen to defend U.S. citizens and property, pursuant to the War Powers Resolution.

“Although these security forces are equipped for combat, these movements have been undertaken solely for the purpose of protecting American citizens and property,” the president wrote in a letter to Congress. “These security forces will remain in Libya and in Yemen until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer needed.”

for the safety of our troops, as well as our State Department personnel, in places all over the world-

especially in those two countries, where boots are now on the ground.

As a retired U.S. Army officer, I feel for the men and women who go into harms way to protect our national interests, and bring our diplomats out to safety.

In what way is creating a mocking portrayal of the Prophet and putting it on YouTube in Arabic freedom of speech and in what way is it yelling "fire" in a dangerous world?

than be incited to violence over some stupid movie.

Heck, who was that "artist" that did something with urine and Jesus? Or another guy who did something with elephant dung? (I'm probably barely in the ballpark, I try not to remember stupid shit like this.) If I recall correctly the fundies were so up in arms they tried to defund the NEA. Wow, now that's a violent reaction!! No wonder we call them the "American Taliban"!

I sure as hell don't "support" the movie but to compare murder and rioting to a fucking film is just ludicrous.

And THAT IS a "clash of civilizations". Unfortunately. We think stupid ludicrous even hurtful ideas can be dealt with by more ideas. They - the people involved in the rioting, not all Muslims but apparently a sizable chunk of them - think ideas should be dealt with by violence.

That clash is a problem.

~~~
On a side note, it sounds to me like there is room to go after the filmmaker legally, NOT to challenge it on a "fire in a theater" first amendment basis, but because the actors were duped and after they did their parts, their words were overdubbed with the hateful anti-Muslim stuff. That's GOT to be against some law, and if it isn't, we need such a law. Literally putting words in someone's mouth is NOT free speech. The actors claim they were misled this way, and if it can be proven, it's a way for the legal system to take action. I think and hope.
any theater that fills over capacity and has difficult passages to exit from. In an event of fire, people shouldn't panic but instead exit the theater in an orderly fashion. We should act like civilized people, if you gonna run like a chicken whose head just got cut off because someone yelled fire (fire that you cannot even see or smell because there isn't one) then I don't want you any where near me or my family. I want you to wear an armband that reads "sheepish moron" so I know to avoid you and your kind
And yes, I am arguing for my ability to shout fire in a crowded theater and not get arrested for it. Yes the owner of the theater can kick me out but it shouldn't be a crime
Like on South Park, for example.
Should that be similarly treated?
I really hope the idiots who made this are happy! How many have died? Can you imagine if a follower of Islam made a video that portrayed Jesus as a pedophile? OMG! The Christians would be going crazy!
Was this deliberate to hurt President Obama's reelection?
6. The US Corporate State goes to war;
To satisfy the Multinational Corporations which are accountable to know one. This is all part of the the original agenda of the PNAC. The people of the USA whose blood and treasure is spent in these wars for corporations, gain nothing and lose everything. Unlike Economic Colonialism of the last century, U.S businesses do not benefit from the exploitation of the people and resources of nations it chooses to invade. Instead, the multinationals take it all and leave everyone broke and bleeding.
I really hate that this is happening and that people think it has anything at all to do with free speech or principles of any kind. It is all about greed and the enslavement of people and distribution of wealth and resources to the worlds most powerful interests.
Nothing heroic to see here. Don't be fooled by phoney nationalism.
and I don't buy it at all. There is no action that the USA takes in the MIddle East that can be accepted at face value. After so many lies and so much propaganda aimed at the USAmerican people over the years, how can anyone believe anything they tell us now?
in predominantly Islamic nations?
I bet it's a considerable amount.
Maybe we should just get out of their countries, and then use the cash we save from no longer providing welfare to wealthy corporations to help solve our problems here in the US.
it has client states and those that need regime change. The diplomacy implies an effort to seek peaceful solutions to issues. The USA seeks only what profits The Corporate State and it's multinational corporate allies. US diplomatic missions are just covers for covert activities that serve corporate interests.
how much US property and personnel are still in Libya? I would have imagined, not much/many. The embassy property is trashed and not worth 50 soldiers in any case. Are there more in hiding? Business personnel?
Another thought, with 50 soldiers on the ground, I would imagine the likelihood of suicide bombers searching for Allah would be a real time issue. I trust the capabilities of our troops but I also see sitting ducks at the same time. I would ask for what purpose equal to the value of their lives still is there.
the place they trashed is like a branch to the main embassy. Still no reason to involve ourselves with Libya. WE should never have supported the rebels who helped destroy that wonderful country and now this is the price we pay for doing that.
