Clyburn: 'The President Is Now Glorifying A Loser ... Robert E. Lee Was A Loser'

Source: TPM

April 28, 2019 10:53 am

House Majority Whip James Clyburn on Sunday said he found it “kind of interesting” that President Donald Trump had celebrated Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee as a “great general” given that Lee was, in reality, “a loser.”

Trump recently defended Lee as a way of excusing his comment following the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the rally.

.......................................

“I think he’s expressing what’ts in his heart,” he said of Trump. “The fact of the matter is, Robert E. Lee was a great tactician, was not a great person. Robert E. Lee was a slave owner and a brutal slave master. Thankfully he lost that war.”

The majority whip continued: “I find it kind of interesting that the President is now glorifying a loser. He always said that he hated losers. Robert E. Lee was a loser and even if you could get beyond that, at the end of the Civil War, Robert E. Lee asked all of his comrades to lay down their guns and to furl those confederate flags, and if my memory serves, and put them in your attics, so if the President is going to glorify Robert E. Lee, let’s at least be consistent about it.”

I met this wonderful gentleman in 2008 when he came to Rochester to boost Tim Walz in his second run for re-election in CD-1. I was wearing a red hat with anti-Michele Bachmann pin on it. He held out his hand to me to shake and gave me a big hug. Struck up a conversation with me about the pins on my hat and how long I had been a Democrat. People around us were wanting to talk with him, but he was focused on me.

I handed him a letter I had written to our local paper and asked him if he would be so kind as to make sure it got into his local South Carolina paper. He said that he would. He emailed a few weeks later to give me the link to the paper that my letter appeared. We keep in touch from time to time because as Majority Whip in the House, he is a tad busy. What a gentle and humble man Jim Clyburn is.

Simple and sincere, someone to be proud to associate with and who is thoughtful. Thoughtfulness separates predators from humans. Not all people act human. Good on you and the honorable Mr. Clyburn!

but he apparently admires traitorous loser surrender monkeys?

“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

and neither did the assholes at the Unite the Right rally.

The statues are monuments to bigotry, and they are being removed en masse. That is why the rally took place.

These retorts by our leaders are inadvertently providing cover to Hair Fuhrer. Trump isn't defending a "loser" general. He's defending right-wing racism.

At the beginning of the war he surrendered his military post to secessionists in San Antonio, They ran him out of town. Later he surrendered at Appomattox. He also lost his first campaign in West Virginia to McClellan,

He killed more Americans than any other general in history. He owned and tortured slaves. He even went against his wife's request that the slave families they owned be kept intact. He split up all but one of the families. He was an evil mass murderer, war criminal and the worst kind of traitor to his country. Lincoln should have let him die in jail. Alas, our jails were not big enough to hold all the Confederate traitors.

That Trump has any interest whatsoever in US history? His family (undocumented?) came from Germany, they did not even want the family there, and now Trump is busily preaching that immigrants should leave 'his country', he has never done a thing for 'his' country, he is a draft dodger and a con man who would cheat the poor folks in New York out of the last cent they have, in slum properties, or for work done. And right now he is trying his con game on the country!
