Assange refuses extradition to US; long legal fight expected

Source: AP

LONDON — A defiant Julian Assange told a London court Thursday he will fight extradition to the United States to face charges of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer, arguing that his work as WikiLeaks founder has benefited the public.

Speaking by video link from Belmarsh Prison in southeast London, Assange said: "I do not wish to surrender myself for extradition for doing journalism that has won many awards and protected many people."

His formal refusal to be extradited marks the start of what is expected to be a bruising legal battle over whether he will be brought to trial in the United States.

Assange, wearing jeans and a sports jacket, appeared calm during the brief hearing at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court. Some of his supporters who couldn't get seats in the small courtroom chanted support for Assange from the hallways, shouting "Shame on you" at the judge.

Always wondered about this. Never know if this logistics will be needed in a court of law. Thank you.🏛😸

3. I think he should serve the time in England for jumping bail... then be extradited to Sweden to face

the rape allegation... with any decision regarding extradition to the US made after that. There are people I admire-- who are not Assange fans (at this point, anyway)-- who still worry about the effect of a US extradition on press freedom. While it's pretty difficult for me to see how he could still qualify as a "journalist," whatever the case is for or against US extradition, I'd like to see him answer for the bail jumping and rape allegation first. Is there a reason that wouldn't be the right order?

... since he can then still only get punishment for those crimes described by the judges right now, which allows for prison in up to five years. It is not possible according to the legal cooperation with the U.K. to extend these charges. All laws can be broken, but it is not really plausible - even for assholes.

Did he really think everyone would just forget and one day he'd just walk out and no one would bat an eye?

How long has he been there now? He'd be almost finishing whatever sentence he might get.
