Trump says Kim won't break 'promise to me' after North Korea weapons test
Source: Bloomberg
WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG) - US President Donald Trump brushed off news of a possible weapons test by North Korea, vowing that leader Kim Jong Un will do nothing to interfere and that a denuclearisation deal with the US will happen.
Saturdays (May 4) tweet, posted while Mr Trump was in a motorcade to the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia, was the Presidents first response to news overnight that Pyongyang had fired numerous short-range projectiles off its eastern coast on Saturday, according to South Korean authorities.
The move was seen as Mr Kims latest and most provocative signal of frustration over talks with Mr Trump following the pairs failed summit in Vietnam in February.
The significance of the test was difficult to assess as South Korea revised its account of the nature and scale of the weapons discharged from the eastern port of Wonsan just after 9am Saturday local time.

(12,586 posts)Although he may throw all the presidents that came before him under the bus, as he's done before regarding North Korea. He'll never admit their carefully measured actions accomplished more to contain the threat than his flying by the seat of his pants (also known as "pulling it out of his ass" ) diplomacy.

(70,246 posts)We may never really know what type these shots were since all seem to want to protect Trumps Ego.
.............The weapons were fired from the Hodo Peninsula, which has been the site of past live-fire artillery exercises, and travelled 70 to 200 kilometres, the joint chiefs said earlier on Saturday.
The Yonhap News Agency later reported that the weapons fired were not missiles, citing unidentified lawmakers briefed by intelligence officials.
Missiles are projectiles, but South Koreas Joint Chiefs of Staff might be using projectile to imply an unguided rocket, like one of North Koreas older rocket artillery systems, said Mr Ankit Panda, an adjunct senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists.
This could also be a politicised attempt to make the word missile not so prominent, in case that creates the kind of news cycle that Trump doesnt want.

North Korea has always hated the annual military exercises, which it considers a rehearsal for an invasion. State-run media have continued to denounce the drills.

The Hermit State has rations to 300 grams a day or 11 ounces - with further cuts likely the United Nations said on Friday.
According to US organisation The Nutrition Centre, a good mix of proteins, carbohydrates, fruit, vegetables and dairy products weighs 2 kilos per day per person.
This could get ugly.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, one of the early front-runners in the 2020 Democratic presidential field, said Saturday that President Donald Trump's handling of North Korea is one area where he doesn't "fault" the current commander-in-chief.
Speaking to ABC News' Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl in an exclusive interview for "This Week," the Vermont senator said that Trump meeting face-to-face with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "is the right thing to do."
Karl asked Sanders how he would respond as president to the apparent launch of unidentified short-range missiles by North Korea into the Sea of Japan Friday night, the first missile launch or any kind by the country since November 2017, when it last launched a long-range missile.
"You know, this is one area, actually, where I do not fault Trump. I think the idea of sitting down with Kim Jong Un is the right thing to do. It is very, very difficult, but clearly they are a threat to the planet," Sanders said. "They are isolated. They're demagogic, and we have just got to do everything we can to have China and the people in the Pacific Rim put as much pressure on North Korea and make it clear that they cannot continue to act this way.
