Washington (CNN)Democrats are increasingly in support of impeaching President Donald Trump and removing him from office but the majority of Americans remain opposed to the prospect, a new CNN Poll conducted by SSRS shows.
Trump's approval rating, meanwhile, holds exactly even with where it was in late April -- 43% approve and 52% disapprove of the President, according to the poll. That's the case even as support for impeachment rose slightly from 37% last month to 41% now.
Similarly, those backing impeachment hit 43% in December, down from CNN's previous high mark of this question with 47% in September 2018. The new poll finds 54% are against impeachment.
The shift on impeachment stems mostly from a rebound in support for it among Democrats -- 76% favor it currently, up from 69% in April. Whites who hold college degrees have also increased their support for impeachment. In surveys in April and March, fewer than 3 in 10 in that group favored proceedings, but that number has now climbed to 41%.

(37,648 posts)It used to be in the 30's a while back.
That's a disturbing number.
41% support impeachment. That's certainly not a majority, which I think is needed (or at least half).
Goes to show you. You do something that results in a few dollars more in the paycheck, and you get approval. No matter what crimes you do.

(15,657 posts)Relentless hearings will help move the needle before a floor vote on articles of impeachment occurs.

(37,648 posts)It's time we accepted that we are in uncharted waters and do not know what will happen after we do anything, or not do anything.
To open an impeachment inquiry than fail to impeach gives Trump the "no collusion...no obstruction" finding by Congress.

(36,518 posts)Also, in 2022, congressional repubs can run on "I would have voted to impeach but the dems didn't start an inquiry so I couldn't."
Not impeaching plays into the two narratives, one that the dems are weak, & two that there is no difference between the two parties.
You are right that we don't know what will happen. Impeaching & not convicting is also dangerous. But IMO, ignoring rule of law, House dems ignoring their oath to the Constitution, is more dangerous. I agree that timing is critical, but if they haven't started proceedings by fall, or decide not to impeach at all, I don't give this country very good odds of surviving Trump.

(37,648 posts)It can't go farther than paper, since the Senate won't impeach him. We do know that.
But some people are speculating that we'll WIN seats in Congress and the Presidential election if we impeach, while others predict it will cost us the election. My point is that it could go either way. It really could. An impeachment could realistically result in a Trump win and loss of the House in the next mid-terms. It also really could result in the opposite.
So those things aren't a reason we can use, since we just don't know.
One thing I gather that is worrying Pelosi, as she said on Jimmy Kimmel, is that the House paper-impeaches him, then the Senate doesn't. The Senate's action could be viewed as absolving him, which might mean he wouldn't be held criminally liable after he's out of office.
A lot of "ifs" in her concern. But I gather that is a big concern of hers. It looks like she's hoping for a criminal indictment after he's out of office, which will hopefully happen in 2020. (I could almost view that as passing the buck. Just like Mueller passed the buck.)

(37,453 posts)and then see in a few months. Thats exactly what the fear. Its not the Senate conviction, its the hearings . In the in if they try to brush them aside its going to be awfully hard to say nothing happened.

(261 posts)but the language in the constitution is along the lines of the Senate shall... The writer was speculating that McConnell will take as many liberties as possible with the word shall. Which would throw it to the courts, going way beyond 2020. Hes shameless enough.

(5,275 posts)Much like we wonder now why so many Germans supported Hitler so long.
This is a real period outside the norm here hope we go forward past this without too much damage.
If we do we have to take a serious look at leveling the playing field (Electoral College, make the Senate more equitable, paper ballots with foolproof counting).
As it is there is a pretty formidable deck stacked against us.

(36,518 posts)I thanked my rep for speaking out in support of impeachment. I encouraged my senator to do the same. And I told Madam Speaker my reasons why I support impeachment now. It's not just on Congress - it's on us, too. Voting is just the first part of being engaged. Contacting your reps is the second part.
