Spike Lee Calls For Hollywood To 'Shut It Down' In Georgia

Source: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Director Spike Lee is calling for Hollywood production companies to leave Georgia over a law that would ban abortions as early as six weeks, upon detection of a fetal heartbeat.

Most studios that have commented have said they're waiting to see if the so-called "heartbeat" law actually takes effect next year, or if the courts will block it. But at the arrivals line for Denzel Washington's American Film Institute lifetime achievement tribute Thursday, Lee said now is the time for Georgia-based productions to "shut it down" and boycott the state's booming film industry to drive change.

Lee acknowledged that a mass exodus could dent livelihoods, but cited black bus drivers affected by the Civil Rights Movement-era boycott in Montgomery. "I know it's going to affect people's livelihood. But that's how things change," Lee said. "You've got to be on the right side of history, and the state of Georgia and those other states, they're wrong," he added.

Georgia's economy currently gets a $9.5 billion annual boost from the industry. -END.

in these states than in places like Georgia.

That's going to affect the cost of filming here.

For decades, Hollywood has been making movies set in Seattle that are actually filmed in Vancouver, B.C., and films set in New York City that are filmed in Toronto, because of the generous tax incentives Canada offers for filmmakers to do so. NYC and Seattle are hideously expensive to film in. So currently Georgia-based shows probably won't want to move there.

Just because they might not get away with it, the sutudios would stay? Capitalism and politics, what a joke.

the pukes claim to the party of business (they want GA to be a 'business first' kinda state), but then go and do shit like this with the forced birth bill. those same pukes are also 'skeered' by them limousine libruls from the 'left coast' but also use those same persons to help dog-whistle their followers into sending $ to them.

bottom line, GA will have to feel a real economic sting for this effort to be meaningful but i hope they do.

separately, would like to see the 'press' and echo chamber's 'gloves come off' and go after brine kemp's wife and daughters for their opinions and potential treatment under this forced birth bill. effectively hound them into making a public stand - however 'uncomfortable' it may be for them. same with the female spouses of any 'puke representative that voted for this shit...

"Oh, but think of the poor crews who need a job!!111!!!" BS. The "poor crews" are the very people who are to blame, since they pulled the lever for the cretins. Howard is just another charlatan to whom nothing means more than his fat wallet.

I will never watch a TV show or movie made in Georgia ever again. It has to be the audience that hurts Georgia's film industry. To hell with Ron Howard.

shutting down everything in asshole states.

Let them fend for themselves. They keep parroting that particular point of view anyway. Withdraw all Federal aid. Let us see how long it takes until they implode, or come to reason. I have always tried to be reasonable - that is now gone. Fuck them!
