U.S. to withhold hundreds of millions in Central America aid
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trumps administration announced on Monday plans to permanently divert hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, after Trump blasted the three countries because thousands of their citizens had sought asylum at the U.S. border with Mexico.
Congressional aides said the administration told them it would reallocate $370 million in aid to Central America that lawmakers had approved for fiscal 2018, and suspend an additional $180 million Congress had approved for fiscal 2017.
All of the money for those years has not yet been spent.
The plan was likely to run into stiff opposition in Congress. Many lawmakers, including some of Trumps fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, have chafed against the presidents repeated decisions to disregard spending bills passed by Congress, some of which he has signed into law himself.

All that's going to do is make more people leave. I read somewhere that the police often don't have gas to get to crime scenes.

(6,182 posts)to keep the turmoil high in those countries and keep the flow of refugees high so as to fuel the whole immigration crisis BS at out border that the Republicans need to keep the fear level high and thus get more votes for their anti-immigration candidates in 2020.
They're using human misery as a tool in their election campaign.
This is not only inhumane, but both un-christian and un-american.

(397 posts)what foreign aid is, what it does and what it achieves.
It goes on some very shady things, such as easing the way for US companies going in to mine or drill, but you'd be surprised how much foreign aid goes to the states. Some fairly directly - like foreign aid to a country that wants to buy armaments, jet fighters etc. The foreign aid money goes to Boeing/Lockeheed/whoever, that country is now tied in with buying parts snd systems from that manufacturer, - the "aid" is also given in the form of a loan, putting that country in debt and making it beholden to the USA - should they try and use them against an ally of the US, they'll find they can't get parts for them.
Another typical way of gaming the system are "projects" - an American company - maybe with friends in the White House gets greenlghted to pay a hydro-electic dam in a "less developed" country that is desperately in need of some infrastructure, the US company builds an expensive dam and pockets the money - the labor is local, so cheap if not free. The country is then on the hook to repay the loan, as well as may the US company for parts and expensive maintenance contracts. The US company states that it was an overseas project, and thus dodges taxes.
in many cases, a dictator or military in those countries may require bribes and so prices tend to get inflated to cover for it. A country may end up with a five million dollar dam, that cost 2.5 to build, costs a million a year to maintain, and is only built to act for ten years, then they pay interest and a small country can very quickly find itself in massive debt.
Foreign aid can - and does - some very good things, but what Trump seems to be missing, is that a lot of his donors actually rely on the dirtier side of "foreign aid" to keep their profits flowing.
