(CNN) -- The driver of a pickup involved in a crash that killed seven motorcyclists in New Hampshire has been arrested and faces seven counts of negligent homicide, officials said Monday.
A press release from Deputy Attorney General Jane E. Young's office says that Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, was arrested at his home in West Springfield, Massachusetts, and taken into custody on a "fugitive from justice" charge.
He was scheduled to be in Springfield District Court on the fugitive from justice charge Monday afternoon, according to Kate Spiner, a spokesperson for the deputy attorney general.
That charge is based on an arrest warrant issued Monday charging him with seven counts of negligent homicide, a press release from the deputy attorney general's office said.
Seven motorcyclists were killed and three others injured on Friday when they collided with Zhukovskyy's truck which was going the opposite direction, police said.
....
State police collision analysis and reconstruction teams are investigating the crash, along with local police, the Coos County Attorney's Office and the National Transportation Safety Board.
CNN's Christina Maxouris, Deanna Hackney, Amir Vera, Laura Ly, Tatyana Bellamy-Walker, Madeleine Thompson, Justin Webb and Monica Haider contributed to this report.

(5,479 posts)it looks like he was towing a long auto-carrier type of trailer, but it was empty at the time. The impression I got from the various articles suggests that he may have made a sudden move (possibly going too fast, crossed the centerline, and swerved back into his own lane), and the empty trailer jackknifed across the lane into the path of the oncoming riders. Looks like they also found possible heroin residue in his residence when they arrested him.
The riders were members of the Jarheads MC, a group of Marine Corps veterans and their spouses.

(86,798 posts)I heard a little less than that on NPR on a top of the hour thing. Lived in NH for much of my teens, sad accident. I wish there were more stringent requirements for licensing, like proof of actual skill.

(12,414 posts)The first question, was he tested for drugs after the accident? What was the condition of the pick-up? Its tires and brakes? The owner of the truck may also have responsibility beyond that of hiring a lousy driver.
The tread on the tires may not be discernible, depending on the extent of the truck fire.

(86,798 posts)driving regs, drove for a living for a long time and was a CDL instructor for a time as well. I was voicing my wish because the reality doesn't cut it.
Yeah, the fire will impede some evidential findings. There's no excuse for bad driving, especially with multiple vehicles.

(14,494 posts)Fishtailing is entirely possible and the odds of it happening are quite high. If that trailer fishtailed, it would be all over the width of that highway. I've seen it happen many times even with short U-Haul trailers and it's very violent. Many times so violent, it can disorient the driver and even snap off trailer hitches. I think this rig used a fifth-wheel, though.
From the photos, the road appears hilly and curvy which can invite the triggering of instability. An inexperienced driver trying to correct improperly adds to the oscillation.
This was a very bad combination of equipment, conditions and fate for a two lane road....

Many of his friends were there. Not at all pretty from their accounts.
So sad.

(18,497 posts)That sounds like dangerous equipment for someone with little experience.
It is very suspicious and height of cowardice that he left the scene.
Hit and Run is sickening.

The West Springfield resident accused of causing a crash that killed seven motorcycle riders is to be arraigned on charges of negligent homicide in New Hampshire on Tuesday.
Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, waived extradition from Massachusetts on Monday in a hearing in Springfield District Court and was then turned over to the custody of New Hampshire officials, said Jane E. Young, Deputy Attorney General of New Hampshire.
His arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the Coos County Superior Court in Lancaster, New Hampshire, Young said.
Zhukovskyy was arrested by Massachusetts State Police on a fugitive from justice charge at about 8 a.m. at his home on 90 Newbridge St., after a warrant for his arrest for seven counts of negligent homicide was issued in New Hampshire, she said, in a written statement.
