Amash doesn't rule out presidential bid, says 'big problem' if Pelosi won't start impeachment
Source: NBC News
Rep. Justin Amash, a Michigan independent, said Sunday that he hasn't ruled out running for president in 2020 and said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's stance against launching impeachment proceedings "a mistake."
Speaking with CNN's "State of the Union" after he announced in a July 4th Washington Post op-ed that he was leaving the Republican Party, Amash said he "still wouldn't rule" out a a presidential bid.
"I believe that I have to use my skills, my public influence, where it serves the country best," Amash said. "And I believe I have to defend the Constitution in whatever way works best."
But, he said, he remains "confident" about his ability to keep his congressional seat, adding that he wants to continue representing his constituents. Amash drew a Republican primary challenger shortly after he first came out in favor of starting the process of impeaching President Donald Trump in May.

(7,947 posts)William Weld is running against Trump in the primaries (if they're even held by the GOP). A primary opponent in the primary campaign for some reason usually has the correlation of the nominee losing the general.
So Amash would do better to run as a GOPer in the primaries. An independent might just syphon off trump-hating GOPers who might otherwise vote for the Dem. Am I wrong?
I believe you are correct.

(14,578 posts)We don't have to hold a vote tomorrow, for God's sake. I mean, they could drag on for six months, and in the process would educate many Americans about what a dirt-bag Trump really is. Here we are worrying about whether an independent like Amash, should he choose to run for president, would weaken us...what is the matter with our leaders?
It is past time to begin hearings because politics MUST be put aside if there is reason to impeach. MUST. Because of the oaths of office they all swore. Not to begin these hearings now is a big, big mistake.

(108,980 posts)can be used in impeachment.
Over the next two months the Senate Intelligence Committee will release the results of its 2 year investigation, and Robert Mueller is set to testify in 10 days.
But I don't know what you expect Nancy to do. She can't wave her magic gavel and suddenly get 100 more members on board. And the absolutely critical thing is that we don't lose our House majority. If she were to push people on board the impeachment train before their districts were ready, the backlash could return the R's to leadership in the House.

(7,142 posts)Republicans are using up all of their powder and by election time we should have quite a stockpile.
Trust in Nancy. We don't need that grand jury information that we would get under an impeachment inquiry we are getting information from the Republican led Senate.
If Speaker Pelosi were to call a 9PM press conference and lay out to the American people the reasons she is opening up an impeachment inquiry she would magically get 100 more members on board.
It is obvious to me that the Speaker wants no part of an impeachment inquiry, she has determined that an impeachment inquiry will help Trump, she is putting all of her eggs in beating Trump at the ballot box.

(14,578 posts)The oath of office necessarily must supersede political considerations. They swear 'without equivocation.'
To my mind, and here is where we respectfully disagree, waiting for the right political time is equivocation.
