CEO Christian Sewing is explaining that Deutsche Bank spread itself too thinly across banking, as it tried to compete with Wall Street investment banks while also offering private and commercial banking services.

It's worse than anything before the 2008 crisis. All it would take is defaults to start occurring to unravel the whole mess. This is probably why they're creating a "bad bank" to take on all of this paper. When it collapses, it won't take the parent bank, just the subsidiary.
