Barr says Trump administration can legally add citizenship question to census
Source: The Hill
Attorney General William Barr said Monday that he believes the Trump administration can legally add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, though the Supreme Court ruled against its inclusion last month.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Barr said he has been in regular contact with President Trump about the question, which the president is determined to see featured on the decennial survey.
I agree with him that the Supreme Court decision was wrong, Barr told the AP. The attorney general added that he thinks there is an opportunity potentially to cure the lack of clarity that was the problem and we might as well take a shot at doing that.
Barr declined to provide further details to the wire service on how the question will be added to the census.

(18,636 posts)...it isn't worth the parchment it's printed on.
Saying the Supreme Court is wrong and can be ignored is exactly like torching the Constitution, since interpreting it is the sole job of the SC.

(3,321 posts)Barr is entirely correct, until someone holds him to account.
My guess is, no one will hold him to account.
Not one single person, not one single entity, not one single body.
I disagree with the supreme court regularly.
Guess that means I can do anything I want, anytime I want.
Just have to disagree and you are home free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he thought trump was spied on, when the Intel agencies were actually tapping the phones of known Russian spies and it happened that Trumpers were on the other end.

(7,901 posts)The Senate could very quickly address this and other egregious power grabs, except that McConnell will not allow it. I do not doubt that other GOP members would support Barr et al but some do not. Since no one can discuss or question such actions in the Senate committees no oversight actually functions in Congress.

(6,881 posts)The lede representing this interview is much more definitive than Barr's much more tentative quote: an opportunity potentially to cure the lack of clarity that was the problem and we might as well take a shot at doing that. It seems they are still trying to work within the Supreme Court's ruling rather than trying to pull an executive order end run, a clear violation of the rule of law. Interesting to see whether Roberts can be intimidated by political pressure.

(2,356 posts)So Trump sends a "presidential memorandum" to Commerce Dept directing it to include infamous citizenship question, and THAT'S how they provide "clarity" for a "redo" to US Supreme Court about having willfully and wantonly LIED to that Court in the first place????
