Trump tells progressive Democrats to go back and fix 'broken and crime infested places' they came from
BY JUSTIN WISE - 07/14/19 08:53 AM EDT
President Trump on Sunday lashed out at a group of progressive Democrats, saying the female lawmakers should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came" before criticizing policies in the U.S.

The tweets came after a week of heightened tensions between Pelosi and a group of freshman House Democrats, including Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, before coming to the U.S. as a refugee with her family. Pressley was born in Cincinnati, while Tlaib was born in Detroit. Ocasio-Cortez was born in New York.
Pelosi experienced pushback from the group of lawmaker after questioning their influence in an interview with The New York Times and referring to them as "the Squad."

(1,990 posts)That's news to me. I live in Somerville MA, which is represented by Ayanna Pressley. People here think the city works rather well. Taxes are reasonable, the schools are good, and it is very easy to get into Boston. There are lots of weekend festivals here. The T (the local subway system) is getting extended through the middle of Somerville, one of the new stations will be a few yards from my house.
As for crime: we used to have the Winter Hill Gang, but that is gone now. If you don't know about the Winter Hill gang, google for Whitey Bulger - that was his gang. There was even a movie about him. The part of Somerville I live in is: Winter Hill.

A racist tweet against diversity and a hit on ladies to boot. Not just any ladies, but ladies
who are members of Congress.
This moment is it. You don't attack ladies, who are members of Congress who are also minorities. .Trump will have to apologize. (But I don't think he will). This will allow Republicans to finally attack Trump. And they will. Just wait and see.
Remember this: Trump is a person who thinks he can get away with anything.
But no one can get away with racist language against minority women in 2019. This tweet will unify those who are against this kind of racist talk. My guess is that is a very large percentage of our population ( maybe 70 percent) will be disgusted by this. Yes, 20 to 25 percent will stand behind Trump but that is not enough to save him. This is such an obvious racist attack on minority women in congress, that everyone can see the truth. Trump is a racist person who is President of the U.S.A., and needs to be removed. People will argue on this, but Trump cannot defend himself on this, "Go back to your own country remark." This is awful and just plain disgusting.

(3,251 posts)No disrespect intended, but I don't see it happening. Trump has said and done things equally as awful as this or worse, and he's still squatting in the Oval Office. I don't foresee the GOP or his base turning on him over this remark. It's just another example of how Trump, upon reaching the bottom of the barrel, breaks out the shovel and starts to dig. I think most people are just numb to his bullshit, honestly. I'd be glad to be proven wrong on this, though. Maybe I'll be surprised.

(3,251 posts)What I said was that I'm not holding my breath for them or the GOP to turn on Trump. Nor am I holding my breath for this to be the thing that finally takes Trump down. How many times have we heard that before? Every damn time he says or does something stupid and/or reprehensible, that's how many times.
Also, tweeting stupid racist garbage isn't illegal, so there's that...

(7,153 posts)Trump slammed over attack on Democratic congresswomen
Date 15.07.2019
Democratic lawmakers have united in condemning US President Donald Trump as racist after he said that a group of progressive congresswomen should go back to the "crime infested places from which they came."
(snip)
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful Democrat in the lower chamber of Congress, said on Twitter that the comment "reaffirms" that Trump "has always been about making America white again."
Ocasio-Cortez said she was from the United States and swore allegiance to the country, adding that the president could not "conceive of an America that includes us."
(snip)
Omar, Pressley and Tlaib and dozens of other Democratic lawmakers, senior party figures and presidential candidates also denounced the comment as racist and xenophobic in separate tweets. Republican lawmakers remained mostly silent.
Three of Trump's apparent targets Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley and Tlaib were born and raised in the United States. Omar was born in Somalia and moved to the US when she was 12 years old.

Tlaib responded by saying Trump needs to be impeached. Ocasio-Cortez said: The country I come from, and the country we all swear to, is the United States.
Omar called Trump the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen. Pressley said: This is what racism looks like. We are what democracy looks like.
Bernie Sanders was among others who called the attack racist. When I call the president a racist, this is what Im talking about, the Vermont senator wrote on Twitter.
Justin Amash, a Michigan congressman who left the Republican party over his opposition to Trump, called the remarks racist and disgusting.

Unusually Theresa May, via her press secretary, managed to issue a condemnation of President Trumps latest outrage before Nicola Sturgeon, Scotlands first minister, who is normally much more ready to denounce him. But Sturgeon has now issued her own criticism on Twitter.

The President of the United States telling elected politicians - or any other Americans for that matter - to go back to other countries is not OK, and diplomatic politeness should not stop us saying so, loudly and clearly.

NEW: PM hits out at @realDonaldTrump tweets to US congresswomen. Official spokesman says Presidents comments completely unacceptable.

Whats remarkable about this is that, until now, Theresa May has been extremely reluctant to criticise Donald Trump. Perhaps her stance has shifted in response to what he had to say about her last week.
