MAGA Bomber's Lawyers Blame Trump, Sean Hannity for His Radicalization
Source: Daily Beast
The MAGA Bomber who mailed explosives to President Donald Trumps critics turned violent on a steady diet of Fox News, Trump tweets, and Facebook, his lawyers claim.
... snip ...
Sayoc watched Fox News religiously at the gym, the filing continued. He typically ended his evenings watching Sean Hannitys show. He also began to feel victimized as a Trump supporter, his lawyers wrote. On Facebook, he shared posts about supposed attacks on Trump supporters. When his van was vandalized, he believed it was the work of anti-Trump forces [that] were trying to hurt him.
Sayocs lawyers pinned some of the blame on Trump. He began to consider Democrats as not just dangerous in theory, but imminently and seriously dangerous to his personal safety, they wrote. President Trump did nothing to dissuade this message.
They pointed to multiple instances in which Trump told his followers that Democrats were out to hurt them, including an October 2018 rally when Trump said Democrats destroy people. They want to destroy people. These are really evil people. Sayoc sent the bombs that same month.

I'm not a big fan of excuses for illegal and dangerous behavior, but I also believe that a weak mind, manipulated long enough with false facts and distortions, can be convinced of just about anything.

(1,723 posts)He has continually set the stage for potential violence. And, of course, Putin would love to see a rerun of the American Civil War.
And, look at our Southern border concentration camps. Trump is just waiting for the detainees to riot, obviously trying to make their lives miserable enough to trigger one.

(3,168 posts)And it's always people who were very conservative to begin with. No one has been "converted" or anything. It's just a steady drip-drip-drip reinforcing beliefs they already had, but magnifying them with the outrage meter turned up to 11. On Fox News, they repeat the same talking points over and over and over again, until it becomes deafening. It's no longer enough for them that Democrats have different political opinions. They are now telling their viewers that Democrats are evil, and are the enemy of America.
I really, truly think that most people, deep down, think there is a law out there somewhere that says that "news" programs are not allowed to blatantly lie. I've actually heard people say a version of "if it wasn't true, they wouldn't be allowed to say it." They have no idea that Fox News is an entertainment network masquerading as a news network. All those bobbleheads on Fox and Friends, along with Tucker and Hannity, are actors on a set. It's the same with people who blindly share memes on Facebook all day long that are, at worst, blatantly false, or at best a stretch of a grain of truth.
Sometimes it's so depressing, I feel like giving up. You can't reason with the true believers. I've gotten into comment flame wars with people who insist that the Republican Party is the party of civil rights, or who are convinced that Obama kept kids in cages. Or the latest one I've seen, that we could have built the wall with all that money that Obama sent to Iran.
However, there are some who CAN be reached, even if it's just planting a seed in their heads. I have one co-worker who would seem to be a typical MAGA voter. She's 68, Baptist, and was married to a Baptist preacher before he died last year. She is your typical Southern preacher's wife, but she absolutely despises Trump and thinks he's the biggest hypocrite who's ever lived. So there is a little hope here and there!

(2,412 posts)I went on a Human Rights Tour of Kigali Rwanda. At the Human Rights Museum a large part of the displays were about how Radio Rwanda stirred us the hate that resulted in violent clashes between people who had been neighbors and living side by side. This resulted in large massacres. I stayed in Hotel Rwanda and down the street was the former headquarters of Radio Rwanda. So please dont tell me that Fox News is free speech. This level of hate speech should not be allowed in our country.
