Rutger Hauer Dies: 'Blade Runner' Bad Guy, Genre Star Was 75

Source: Variety

Rutger Hauer, the versatile Dutch leading man of the ’70s who went on star in the 1982 “Blade Runner” as Roy Batty, died July 19 at his home in the Netherlands after a short illness. He was 75.

Hauer’s agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the news and said that Hauer’s funeral was held Wednesday.

His most cherished performance came in a film that was a resounding flop on its original release. In 1982, he portrayed the murderous yet soulful Roy Batty, leader of a gang of outlaw replicants, opposite Harrison Ford in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir opus “Blade Runner.” The picture became a widely influential cult favorite, and Batty proved to be Hauer’s most indelible role.

More recently, he appeared in a pair of 2005 films: as Cardinal Roark in “Sin City,” and as the corporate villain who Bruce Wayne discovers is running the Wayne Corp. in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins.”

of the 80's: Ladyhawke (which is one of my own favorite movies... and not in the hipster, bad-good way, just a movie I really enjoy watching)

"Do you know that hawks and wolves mate for life? The Bishop didn't even leave us that... not even that."

But I'm the first to admit his role as Roy Batty is a Hollywood icon. So much he said between the lines with eyes of quiet anguish.

I'm also a fan of that movie.

I liked "The Hitcher" (1986). Rutger Hauer really made that movie better than the average '80s slasher film. It was almost Terminator-esque.

I'm sorry to see him gone.

Rutger Hauer was one of those actors, akin to Alan Rickman and some others, who shine as villains, but make even better heroes.

I was always impressed with Hauer's flawless American accent. I know they start teaching English early in the Netherlands. And since World War II, English teachers there have more often been American, rather than British as before.

Like you thought he was going to explode at any time.

The only low-key role I ever saw him in was when he played the conflicted Nazi architect Albert Speer in ABC's miniseries Inside the Third Reich, and he was terrific in that, too.

He created a powerful character in Blade Runner and helped to really convey the theme of darkness that was established in the film.
