Democratic governors sound alarm on Trump reelection
Source: Politico
With all the infighting and intraparty intrigue in recent weeks most recently over the prospect of impeaching the president many Democrats in the states are beginning to worry the party is losing its grip on its message, potentially paving the way to Donald Trumps reelection.
The anxiety reverberated far from Washington this week, as the nations governors gathered here for their annual summer meeting.
Nationally, the focus has been on last weeks hearings and quote-unquote oversight, the question of impeachment, the effectiveness of Trump to make it about
the four [congresswomen who constitute the squad], California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday. Thats been the zeitgeist, and so Trump being the master of deflection and distraction
its been hard for the Democrats to sort of hold that message.
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak the governor of an early primary state and a potential battleground in the general election said that going into 2020, his constituents want to look forward, and how are we going to make their lives better.

(1,733 posts)How do you explain to the everyday Joe worker, who is enjoying the benefits of a hot economy, that voting out the party in power is the right thing to do?
Have heard that case made yet.

(10,212 posts)It ain't working for most people.
It's just the Capitalist Kings and their soul sucking minions who are busily enjoying the benefits of not being held accountable for all their crimes. The party buddies of Epstein and Brett are the ones enjoying raping children; locking up kids and watching them die, paying shit for wages and taking away pensions and health care. The kings are having a gay old time and they pump as much money as trip their triggers to politicians to do their bidding from the Supremes to the fat Traitor In the white house and his Slovenian sex worker.
The working Joe is getting shit on, and yeah sometimes he doesn't notice because he can blame a black person, a Muslim or a poor starving child. "I may have to live in a van to survive but those other people have it worse and that's ok," says working Joe.

(13,563 posts)The media along with Republicans want you to think the economy is great, but for many it is not. People are still having to work more than one job to make ends meet.

(5,586 posts)I am firmly in the middle class, not rich, and not poor. The economy is going well from my perspective, and from the perspective of the majority of my peers. I've had friends that lost their job, and they're employed again in a similar position with the same or better pay within weeks. Unemployment is crazy low, and the jobs market is hot.
Trying to convince people the economy sucks is not a winning issue. Are some people being left behind, yes. And we should be helping those people. But saying the economy sucks is a surefire way to not being taken seriously.

(1,127 posts)the actual performance of our current economy is a facade that's being propped up by stimulus measures (tax and interest rate cuts) that are normally utilized when an economy is struggling and encountering serious challenges. The stimulus actions along with unchecked spending, especially for defense, has resulted in massive increases in the deficit and debt. It's a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Also, the amount of private and corporate debt is alarming and can easily become a crisis at any time.

My fear is that over time, personal expectations regarding the economy have been lowered to a point that people feel good today about currently being able to as well as the prospect for continuing to scrape by. My fear is that they focus on "it's better than it was" two years ago as opposed to 20, 30 and 40 years ago.
There are also enough people out there doing reasonably well (not having to scrape by) for whom the economy is not an issue. For those, from their perspective, the economy IS doing well. It's a self-centric perspective that too many people have and have had for far too long. It's how we as a society got to the extreme income inequality that exists across America today.
At the national level, if we focus campaigning at all on the economy, it should be on the affordability of health care, higher education and retirement, as well as wage stagnation/income inequality, the loss of worker benefits due to the dismantling of collective bargaining, and stabilization of jobs/job markets long term.

(10,212 posts)I'm old, so to me a good job meant a regular salary with continual raises. Yes, the raises were automatic every year, and sometimes every 90 days, without requiring you to go beg your boss. My parents were too poor to help pay my way but I didn't need them to.
A job that gave me at least 4 weeks vacation, sick time, health care, pension benefits. I never worked when I was sick.
It meant all weekends off unless overtime was involved. And overtime was time and a half and few people really wanted it.
It meant a job where I could afford a decent apartment, plenty of food, water and electricity, clothes every 6 months. It allowed for easily affordable medical care and medicines. It meant I could afford a car and gas and insurance and maintenance.
It also meant I could put a little aside to pay my $300 a semester college Tuition. And I never had a credit card, but my parents did co-signed a car loan with me.
Tell me you folks who aren't lawyers or ivy league grads, do you have these kind of jobs? I don't think I could even find a job like that for myself today. But it was my job in 1977 working at the parts store, with 2 more years left on my BS degree.
And my friends, many of them who had already graduated college with college loan payments of $10 a month that were almost paid off, had even better jobs.
I know of no one today who has a job like that. Lowered expectations ... folks you really don't know what a good economy is.

(1,736 posts)Advanced degrees can sometimes get you those kinds of jobs, or living in an area with abundant work, not having a family or minimal college debt, and working constantly with a side gig. That's the only real formula for getting ahead. Any change in these factors as described leaves you in or near poverty.

(51,632 posts)and I had to remind her that the economy is not really that good and most people are not earning a livable wage, can't afford healthcare without insurance or pay off debt, pay rent, etc. The economy is also getting worse in housing markets marking a likely recession coming according to some economists. The GOP would like to push it onto the Dems but won't be able to. This will be on the fucking moron's watch and there will be no Obama to clean it up like we Dems usually do when the GOP fucks up the economy.
