BEIRUT (AP) - In a rare public appearance, the leader of the militant Hezbollah group exhorted hundreds of thousands of supporters Monday to keep up the campaign against an anti-Islam video that has unleashed deadly violence and anger at the United States across the Muslim world.
Although the massive, well-organized rally in Beirut was peaceful, protesters in Afghanistan set fires near a U.S. military base, clashed with police in Pakistan, where one demonstrator was killed, and battled with officers outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.
The turmoil surrounding the low-budget video that mocks the Prophet Muhammad showed no sign of ebbing in the week after protesters first swarmed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, died amid a demonstration in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.
At least 10 protesters have died in the riots, and the targeting of Western diplomatic sites has forced Washington to increase security in several countries. Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut destroyed classified material as a security precaution, according to a State Department status report.

Nasrallah who does not usually appear in public for fear of assassination called for Monday's protests in Beirut, saying the U.S. must be held accountable for the film because it was produced in America. (9,223 posts)Biggest-ever rally over an anti-Islamic film has brought scores to Beirut, Lebanon, following a call for mass demonstrations by Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
Most of the demonstrators were wearing green and yellow headbands, indicating membership in Hezbollah. The official number of participants is yet to be released, but has been estimated based on video and photos to be over a hundred thousand people.
"America, hear us don't insult our Prophet," the protesters were chanting. The rally was split into two columns, with women marching separately from men. Some were holding portraits of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Sporadic shouts of "Death to Israel" and "America is the biggest devil" could also be heard from the crowd, as RT's Lucy Kafanov reported from the scene. A protester, nevertheless, told RT that the demonstrators' anger is not with the American people, but with the US government for allowing the film to spread.

One has to note the irony. Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of Hizbullah supporters demonstrated against the offensive internet film. It was noteworthy that the protest by the "anti-American" Islamist Shi`ite party did not result in one act of violence while the protests by "pro-Western" March 14 Salafites in Tripoli (Lebanon) resulted on attacks on KFC and Hardee's. (The press indicated that the attackers ate all the fried chicken before setting the restaurant on fire--kid you not). So the pro-US Islamists are more dangerous than the anti-US Islamists? And the Islamists of Benghazi who attacked and killed the Americans were also part of the pro-NATO Islamists. What does that say? Plenty.

I thought it was a nice touch that the goons ate all the chicken before burning the place; at least the food didn't go to waste. And those are the people that the State Dept wants to send against Hizbu'llah and run the place instead. The future looks bright...and with that phrase, I am indeed only referring to the glow of the fires that'll be set.
Saw some of the footage of the event. Massive and well organized, very discliplined HA core with a large cross-section of their non-Shiite supporters prominently on display. It was interesting to see a lot of Christians and others still supporting the Party at this time.
