Apple sells 2 million new phones, shares touch $700

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Apple Inc booked orders for over two million iPhone 5 models in the first 24 hours, reflecting a higher-than-expected demand for the consumer device giant's new smartphone and setting it up for a strong holiday quarter.

Apple shares rose in extended after-market trading to touch $700 per share for the first time. They have gained nearly 22 percent in the past 3-1/2 months in the build-up to the launch of the iPhone 5.

Apple said on Monday that pre-orders outstripped initial supply but it would deliver most phones as planned by Friday, the first day of delivery. Many would not be available until October, however.

It is not unusual for Apple products to sell out the first day but this time around Apple has doubled its first-day sales record. Last October, the company booked 1 million orders for the iPhone 4S, in the first 24 hours. That had beaten Apple's previous one-day record of 600,000 sales for the iPhone 4.

2. I guess Apple should just cancel all the billions their spending in the USA

I guess Apple should just cancel all the billions they're spending in the USA and spend it in Korea because Americans are stupid.

Apple isn't spending that much in America. It keeps much of it's profits over seas waiting for Romney's tax rates to go down and it supports the Chinese workers and economy. Oh, and much of their parts come from Korea too! They keep suing themselves for some reason. That's stupid.

try again.

...but my guess is that your numbers are just imaginary. Or you left your computer logged in and one of those stupid Americans is trying to make you look stupid.

...multiple data centers around the country (most of which will be solar powered - green jobs), and they are adding/expanding Apple Stores all the time. That's just off the top of my head.

They are hiring tens of thousands here over the next few years alone. Hundreds of thousands of jobs support the Apple ecosystem now and are ever growing, much like the supply system generated by GM.

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone That's the cheapest one. I guess that's about $ 820.

I do know that on 2 year contracts , with the phone free of charge , the monthly rentals are at least 50% higher than the i4S models.

I've had enough of 2 year contracts - bought myself a Galaxy Note for £400 on ebay and put it on a 1 year pay monthly sim card.

6. All-American Apple? iPhone 5’s Monster Lift for China

Boosted by the red-hot iPhone 5, exports of Apple products will give the Chinese economy a monster lift in the fourth quarter, according to Barclays.

“We estimate that as much as one-third of Chinese export growth in 4Q12 will be Apple related,” said Jon Windham, an analyst for the firm, in a note Monday.

The new iPhone 5, along with the iPad, iPod and Mac lines, are assembled in China, using many materials from the region as well. The company sold 2 million iPhone 5s in the first 24 hours the device went on sale.

It will give both the US and Chinese economies a badly needed lift. No matter how you feel about Apple, its good to see some confidence and spending.

13. Happen to have any proof that it will provide a lift to the US?

I suspect in china it will because its made over there but how exactly will it provide a lift here when Apple keeps most of its profits offshore to avoid paying taxes on it?
