Trump says he's 'very strongly' considering commuting Rod Blagojevich's sentence
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Wednesday said he's "very strongly" considering commuting the prison sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D), who is serving 14 years on federal corruption charges. His wife I think is fantastic and Im thinking about commuting his sentence very strongly," Trump added. "I think its enough, seven years.
I thought he was treated unbelievably unfairly," the president told reporters on Air Force One en route back to Washington, D.C., after visiting the sites of recent mass shootings.
Blagojevich was removed from office in 2009 and was later convicted of a wide array of corruption charges, including trying to sell Barack Obamas Senate seat after he was elected president in 2008. The former governor began serving a 14-year prison sentence in 2012.
Trump noted that former FBI Director James Comey a frequent target of criticism for the president worked the case to convict Blagojevich.

(7,596 posts)He was given 14 years. I remember being irritated by this because Bush and Cheney were and are still walking free despite being responsible for the deaths of thousands. Blago's a douche, but he didn't kill anybody.

(9,656 posts)what rod b did was to ask dems for fundraisers....to show they were in a strong enough position to hold the seat come next election...which was only a month away or so
he was not convicted the first time bushs justice department tried him but when he was broke and couldn't pay a decent lawyer they got the conviction
trump has done stuff a hundred times worse but dems are quick to fold on their own...scared to be seen as criminal

Illinois delegation of House Republicans on Thursday urged President Donald Trump not to commute the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, the states former governor, after the president told reporters he was considering doing so.
In a statement, Reps. Darin LaHood, John Shimkus, Adam Kinzinger, Rodney Davis and Mike Bost said that commuting Blagojevichs sentence sets a dangerous precedent and goes against the trust voters place in elected officials.
Its important that we take a strong stand against pay-to-play politics, especially in Illinois where four of our last eight Governors have gone to federal prison for public corruption, the congressmen wrote.
The states Republican delegation previously wrote to Trump in June 2018, also to oppose a presidential commutation of Blagojevichs sentence. The Thursday statement renewed the call after Trump told reporters a day earlier that he felt Blagojevichs seven years in prison had been enough.
I thought he was treated unbelievably unfairly, Trump said Wednesday. Hes been in jail for seven years over a phone call where nothing happens.
