Democratic veteran lawmakers call for return of assault weapons ban

...................................
Mass shootings are occurring at an alarming rate and will continue unless we stop the easy access to weapons of war, Democratic Reps. Mikie Sherrill (N.J.) and Jason Crow (Colo) wrote in an op-ed published on Monday in USA Today.
Were intimately familiar with assault weapons designed for military use. While serving in the Army and Navy, we both experienced the rigorous training required of all military personnel who carry them. And we know the purpose of a gun that can fire hundreds of rounds in minutes. Its not for hunting or for civilian self-defense. Its for warfare.
..........................................
The pair also touted common sense gun laws from their states, highlighting Colorados universal background check legislation and New Jerseys claim to have the strongest gun laws in the nation.................................
........................................................
Since returning home from our tours of duty, we have watched in horror as military assault rifles have found their way into our schools, malls, movie theaters, music festivals and places of worship, giving a single disturbed individual the power to inflict mass casualties. Each time, Americans cry out for leadership while Congress refuses to act, they wrote.
...........................................
...................
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) must stop playing political games and bring gun safety bills to the Senate floor. Senators must have the courage to tell the American people where they stand and not hide behind the majority leader any longer. ..................................

(10,849 posts)"Freedom of the press being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances shall not be infringed."
So if the 1st was worded that way in your mind only the press would have freedom of speech, not the people?
It's called the Bill of Rights for a reason.
The Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. It spells out Americans' rights in relation to their government. It guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individuallike freedom of speech, press, and religion.

Melt down the illegal multishot weapons into bulk steel..
Jail any resistance..

(15,333 posts)I suspect the answer to the second is 'no', as most gun control action seems to consist of "passionately denouncing guns
and/or gun owners online"

Why the fuck would I be doing any 'pickin up'?

(4,373 posts)of which the 2nd could benefit by...I'd prefer complete riddance of it, but if the gun toadys feel comfy having it in the constitution...so be it...But the new amendment (to the 2nd) would be worded as I said...only single shot guns...re-registration of ALL guns..Have the national guard go house to house for the re-registration, maybe a blackhawk as backup...a little look-see around while there...jail for resistors...
Get real people..guns are americus ebola virus...

(19,257 posts)You'd gladly step aside while they tore it apart? Because that's what you're advocating: door-to-door warrantless searches of every American's house. And no cop does a "little look around" once inside.

So, yes, I daresay 'warmongering chickenhawks' is a quite accurate description

(15,333 posts)After 13 years at DU, I could count on the fingers of one hand the people who have, when directly asked, said that they
would indeed join a confiscation squad.
Those few souls at least seem to have the courage of their convictions.
The rest of those can most kindly be described as 'Keyboard Kommandos', but more
accurately as 'chickenhawks'.

(19,257 posts)Millions were legally manufactured and sold in the 90's during the ban because bans just remove cosmetic features.
Hell, you can still buy AR-style rifles in every state with an existing AWB, even California: https://www.pewpewtactical.com/featureless-ar-15-rifle/

(4,993 posts)1) Prohibitions have never really worked well. See the 18th Amendment (which made many Americans criminals and gave rise to organized crime). See the "War on Drugs" which, like Prohibition, gave rise to the hugely influential and corrupting drug cartels.
2) The USA is at it's best when it expands rights (Bill of Rights, dealer's choice on any number of Amendments and Supreme Court decisions) but at the USA is at it's worst when restricting rights (Dred Scott, Buck v. Bell, Korematsu, Plessy, Kelo, to name just a few).
But hey, who cares about all that stuff when it drives forward someone's agenda.
