LA Opera to investigate Placido Domingo over accusations
By JOCELYN GECKER
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Two music companies canceled appearances by Placido Domingo and the Los Angeles Opera said Tuesday it would launch an investigation in response to an Associated Press story in which numerous women accused the opera legend of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior spanning decades.
Domingo has been general director of the LA Opera since 2003 and previously served as the companys artistic director, jobs that gave him the power to cast roles and his accusers say make, or break, careers.
Some of the women told the AP that Domingo used his power at the LA company and elsewhere to try to pressure them into sexual relationships, with several saying that he dangled jobs and then sometimes punished them professionally if they refused his advances.
On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Opera announced they would cancel upcoming performances featuring the star, regarded as one of the greatest opera singers of all time.

(129,376 posts)He was due to perform here in the Orchestra's season opening gala next month, the significance being that the last time he had actually performed with the Philly Orchestra, was in 1973 (per other info not shown in the excerpt of the below article).

In the wake of sexual misconduct allegations reported Tuesday, the Philadelphia Orchestra has withdrawn its invitation for Plácido Domingo to appear with music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in the seasons gala opening concert on Sept. 18. It has not announced a replacement. The Associated Press reported that the multiple-Grammy winner, 78, one of the most powerful and celebrated figures in the opera world, had sought sexual favors from women, pressured them to provide sexual favors by holding out job prospects, and punished them professionally if they refused. Specific allegations from eight singers and a dancer claim the misconduct took place over decades beginning in the 1980s.
In an unsigned statement, the Philadelphia Orchestra Association affirmed a commitment to provide a safe, supportive, respectful, and appropriate environment for staff and artists:
The Philadelphia Orchestra Association has withdrawn its invitation to Plácido Domingo to appear as part of its Opening Night concert on Sept. 18, 2019. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive, respectful, and appropriate environment for the orchestra and staff, for collaborating artists and composers, and for our audiences and communities. Information about Opening Night artist and program changes will be announced at a later date.
In addition to the action taken by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Opera also announced Tuesday the cancellation of an October concert featuring Domingo. The Los Angeles Opera, where Domingo has served as general director since 2003, announced that it has undertaken an independent investigation.

(57,167 posts)knows he engages in for years and how the industry he's in decides there should be an investigation. Whats to investigate except that the industry investigating needs investigated as it allowed these men to get away with exploiting and harming the careers and lives of people under them? The complicit need to investigate???
Its not like Weinstein, Domingo, Epstein even made any effort at all on hiding active years of their behaviors. Investigation? How about admission of guilt from everybody who allowed it to go on for years????
