Trump wants to bring back mental institutions to address mass shootings
Source: CBS News
President Trump says he wants to reopen mental institutions as a way to address mass shootings, an idea he pushed twice Thursday and has floated before.
The president's insistence that mental illness is the cause of mass shootings has disconcerted mental health professionals who insist that most people with mental illness are nonviolent. These experts also say people afflicted with mental illness are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrator, and fear the president's language only further stigmatizes those struggling with mental health issues.
"I do want people to remember the words 'mental illness,'" the president told reporters on his way to a rally in New Hampshire Thursday afternoon, responding to a question about gun control.
"These people are mentally ill and nobody talks about that. But these are mentally ill people, and people have to start thinking about it. I think we have to start building institutions again because, you know, if you look at the '60s and '70s, so many of these institutions were closed...But a lot of our conversation has to do with the fact that we have to open up institutions. We can't let these people be on the streets."

(61,695 posts)Lots of people got turned out of institutions that had no place to go, and they became homeless. Not everyone who is mentally ill has a family to live with or one that can handle taking them in. There are others in prison who should be institutionalized.

It was the GOP who put these poor souls on the street. Now, trumpie wants to help them ? I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

Same shit, different day.

(29,322 posts)Not sure how that correlates to mass shootings but you're right though mass shooters like Dylan Roof are motivated by hate. Mental illness is just a scapegoat for bad gun laws.
Domestic violence is a bigger red flag.

(1 post)I'm an older guy whose mother spent time in a mental institution in the 70s when I was a boy.
I remember what they were like from visiting her. They were abysmal, filthy and frightening.
These days the mentally ill end up in prison or homeless on the street.
Both prison and homelessness are an abysmal, filthy and frightening existence. I think we all know that it's time to get serious about pushing back against mass incarceration. We also know that a nation as rich as ours has no excuse for letting people live on the street.
I guess what I am saying is that I have compassion for the mentally ill, but there seems to be no way to give these poor souls a decent, humane life. If there is a solution, we sure haven't found it in this country.

(5,512 posts)It's not like being mentally ill suddenly turns you the color blue or something. Many seemed sane enough to the outside world, and did not think they needed help.
Also, I would not qualify institutions as an example of "giving help." It's another way of shoveling people no one wants to deal with into a dark corner and turning out the lights.
