Kentucky surgeons operate on McConnell's broken shoulder
Source: UPI
Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell successfully underwent surgery to repair a fractured shoulder he broke at his Kentucky home this month, his office said Friday.
McConnell was initially treated and released from the hospital after he fell at his Louisville home Aug. 4, but the injury required an operation.
"The surgery was performed without incident, and the [GOP] leader is grateful to the surgical team for their skill," spokesman David Popp said in a statement Friday.
The 77-year-old six-term senator is recuperating in Kentucky amid criticisms he hasn't reconvened the upper chamber to take up gun reform legislation. Congress will be on summer recess until Sept. 9.

It would be a shame if he had to retire due to this.

(9,426 posts)He did not ever run for the WH, because he seems to have more power in his position. He certainly seems to rule the (R)'s, telling them which bills he will allow them to vote on. They meekly go along with his decisions, even putting their own "jobs" at risk. In any photos of them clustering around Moscow Mitch, look at the expressions on their faces. I think they HATE him, but do not have the spine to defy him.

(82,383 posts)might not work for a POTUS win. But you're right, look how much power he has, now that he takes the Majority leadership to mean he can just keep legislation away from a vote. That pretty much gives him veto power just like the POTUS.

(3,818 posts)that MM will not run for reelection. A shoulder is about the worst place to have a break. No way to really immobilize a shoulder break, have to have retrofitted clothing, can't even go to the bathroom by himself. A whole host of problems.
So, who would take MM place is he doesn't come back from medical leave? Thune or Grassley?

(13,421 posts)I absolutely loathe turtle boy, but I would not wish a shoulder injury on anybody. EVER. Bad as my injury was, they didn't opt to do a surgical repair on it once they put it back in socket in the ER. ONLY time I have ever screamed in pain. 6 months of physical therapy was not much fun either, but I do mostly have function in that shoulder, along with arthritis and a probable complete replacement in a few years according to the orthopedic specialist.
I'm not 60 yet, and that injury took me down for a long time. Had I been as old as he is, I have no doubt I'd have had to look at a retirement. It really is that bad. Turtle boy will never feel the same again, if that brings anybody any satisfaction. FWIW, I broke mine falling on a concrete walkway while I was appraising a house. It can happen that quick, and be that severe.

Was he drunk? Did he slip in the shower? Has he fallen before?
