Gallup: One-Third Of Lowest Income Voters Support Romney
Source: TPM
While Mitt Romney continues to suffer the fallout from a video that shows him dismissing President Barack Obama's voters, or 47 percent of Americans, as invididuals who do not pay income taxes and depend on government entitlements, new research from Gallup released Tuesday shows that the Republican nominee claims the support from more of those individuals than his remarks seem to suggest.
According to Gallup's polling from the tracking period of Aug. 27-Sept. 16, 34 percent of voters whose household incomes are less than $24,000 a year support Romney. Obama easily wins among those voters, earning the support of 58 percent.
As Gallup points out, a significant portion of the individuals who pay no income tax are the same voters in the lowest income bracket, roughly a third of whom intend to vote for Romney, not Obama.

It's possible that they'd hear the conversations about it. It's been all over NPR today, and I'm sure other radio stations are talking about it.

(662 posts)for the other. So, the video is just something to affirm that Romney is their guy. They dont consider themselves among the 47% because they did not vote for OBAMA. They are probably, mostly white males who live in the South and naturally consider themselves "rugged individualists" and better than the other. That is why the SOUTH IS so backward and the republicans can get away with electing the CEO who committed the biggest Medicare fraud in history elected governor of FL:A secessionists who hires his rich political buds while cutting funds for education and supports DEATH PANELS in TX state hospitals. And of course, they support a murderer of the poor transplant patients in AZ, Brewer is also newly proud of her inhumane "papers please law". Romney is wrong, He will get those "47%" bec they wld vote for him no matter what.

(5,165 posts)I work at Social Security's 800 number and I can absolutely vouch for what Mountain Grammy posted. Every day, I can count on getting a couple callers who love to use the "N" word and trash this president.
I've worked 34 years for Social Security and I've never heard the trashing of any President to the extent I hear it now. And they make no bones about their hatred. A hard core has totally embraced 19th Century Fox, hate radio and our right wing press talking points. And they let the racism flow like the dam is broke.
I pity them because they will be the first to get screwed by the Ryan budget.

(520 posts)That poll is not news here. The low-information southern voters watch only FOX News and listen to hate radio all day long, then parrot right-wing talking points without even understanding they're being had by the 1%. Not long ago, a homeless friend of mine was going off on how wrong the estate tax is! You know the propaganda machine is working when you hear that from a homeless guy.

(20,441 posts)It's how the United States ended up with George W. Bush. We could argue whether or not he won 2000 fairly, but what should be beyond argument is the fact that so many working class people would vote for a rich man who never gave a fuck about any of them.

(2,286 posts)There is a huge disconnect. They are use the safety net because they are good and hard working, everyone else is bad, lazy and abusing the system.
You saw this when the bottom fell out. I remember reading a number of stories about those in the middle class who were shocked to find out how little help out there that there was and how absolutely destitute you must be to qualify for it. After all they years they talked about how easy it would be to live off the system -- if only they weren't responsible and moral -- that they gravy train they talked about amounts to getting pissed on after jumping through multiple hoops.
harmonicon
(12,008 posts)That's the real case of brainwashing and disconnect. There's still a tiny middle class in the US, but they are what most people would consider to be very wealthy, however they are not wealthy enough to be the ones pulling the strings of government and finance.
The greatest coup the elite ever pulled off was convincing the working class that they are middle class. That's part of why so many of these idiots vote for Republicans; "I'm middle class. I don't want to support those lower class lowlifes." They don't even know that they are the lower class.

I'd bet even the most uneducated gambler with a terrible grasp of statistics would find thousands of interviews that never hit a liberal or even a Democrat despite having even a minimum of a 30% chance to be at least a little iffy. It's almost like they're doing it on purpose, which would mean "We're not doing it on purpose! Honest!" is a lie.
Edited to add: I'd never heard of the Daily Caller until now. That was the stupidest comment section I think I've ever read in my entire life. It wasn't the hate so much as the gibberish. Some of it was so bad that if you read the comment in a vacuum I don't think you'd be able to pick out what language they were speaking, much less what their point was.

Are people so Stupid or just plain Ignorant, to the facts that Mittens want them to vote him into the Presidential Office, so that he and his buddies in the equity investment business(i.e. Bain&Co.), can and will outsource or simply move those last few remaining minimal wage jobs, especially in the manufacturing section, because Mittens already know that these same jobs can be done cheaper in some low wage country outside of the USA. Talking about voting against one's own self interest.

(6,785 posts)Is this higher or lower than last election. I want to say a higher percentage are supporting Obama this time, because I think it was around 50/50 last time. If true, I don't know if that's because they've wised up or because of middle-class people that supported Obama have dropped income brackets.
And this doesn't reflect whatever shift Romney running his mouth might cause. I don't think it will be a big shift, but it might cause some to change sides. The ones that don't will just insist that he wasn't talking about them. (Because they're white.)

(32,723 posts)I want you all to stop for just a moment and consider how cheap corporations are. They fuss about the overuse of post-it notes and paperclips but they are willing to spend through the roof to put the likes of FOX "News", Hannity, Limbaugh, and their clones all over media, especially during the drive to and from work and during the lunch hour. All to tell people what the problems of the nation are and to blame Liberals for those problems.
And it works. There are people without two nickles to knock together who can go on at length parroting what they heard from people they admire who they believe are on their side and looking out for them. They have been told what to hate and that includes organizations like Greenpeace. They have been given outrageous conspiracy theories including the claim that George Soros is out to turn America into a Communist Utopia and has his fingers in everything evil all around us. They have been told the Democrats are working with the terrorists to take away guns and convert America into and Islamic Nation.
They have been told the gays are out to destroy marriage in the eyes of God and the Rapture may not include America because we allow certain people to live outside of God's law. They are being told that Republicans are the heroes America needs to be a proud Nation that rules the world.
It's ALL about attitude. It's all about adopting the mindset. Unlike those "lazy" people and the inferior races, they KNOW that all you have to do is rise up above the 47% and celebrate the Triumph of the Will and find Strength Through Joy.

(14,779 posts)Radio came into use in the 1920s, took off rapidly among the Middle Class and Rich, but was slower among the working class and small farmers. Most Working Class and Small Farmers did NOT have radios till the mid 1920s, but still received a good bit of their information through the popular
Chautauqua Circuit a series of traveling adult education programs.
More on the Chautauqua Circuit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chautauqua
The Rich HATED the Chautauqua Circuit, its two most popular speakers with Helen Keller and William Jennings Bryan, both considered one step away from being Communists. Both did all they could to further progressive politics through the Chautauqua Circuit by their speeches in that Circuit.
William Jennings Bryan, best known today for the Scopes Monkey Trial, spoke of the need for reforms to protect the small farmers AND working class people. The best way to see what Bryan wanted is to read Herbert Hoover's comment about FDR's New Deal "Bryanism without Bryan". We have all seem the various movers about Helen Keller, blind and deaf and how see learned to "speak" via sign language, but the story always stopped at that point, for she later when to Collage, married and went on the Chautauqua Circuit, and was to the LEFT of Bryan.
As you can see the Chautauqua Circuit brought to the Rural Areas (and many urban areas) progressive ideas and thoughts. Emphasis was on how to help their fellow man, but also how to help yourself. Radio put a big dent into the Circuit, for people did NOT have to travel to where the Circuit was and did NOT have to pay admission (The Circuit had to pay for itself, thus they charged admissions). The down side was the Right Wing grabbed hold onto the transmission rights and did they best to keep it right wing as possible (While appearing "Neutral" to avoid having to give the "other side" equal time). Thus it was Strikers causing a riot, never Companies on Strike having their security personal beat up peaceful strikers. Food shortages, and high food prices in urban areas, in the Great Depression were NOT reported, as was the inability of farmers to sell their crops anything other then a loss (This had to be solved by Farmers driving their crops and milk into cities and giving it away, for they loss less money that way, brought home to Urban dwellers the food problem was NOT the fault of the Farmers). Notice Radio and Movies made an effort NOT to mention either situation, thus both urban dwellers nor farmers knew of the other's problems.
The Chautauqua Circuit, could have brought this to the attention of the Farmers but it was dead by 1932, Radio and Movies had killed it. The Rich controlled the Radio and Movies (with some exceptions) but the Anti-Red movement of the post WWII era was an attempt not only to break the unions involved in the Movies and to a lesser extent Radio (and up and coming TV) but also to keep control of all three by the rich so the rich could control who heard what.
Side Note: CBS, in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and into the 1980s became the dominant Radio and Television system in the US, the reason for this was simple, its chief competitor, NBC, was controlled by its corporate owners and followed what corporate American wanted. CBS was independent of other Corporation and thus did not have to worry about its reports hurting the profits of its corporate overlords (For it had none). Now, CBS did have to worry about its stockholder and would protect most Right Wing ideas, but not to the extent of NBC (and this remain true when NBC was broken up in an anti-trust action into the NBC and ABC of today). This ended when CBS, original owners died and CBS was sold to its present owners. Yes, about the time FOX came into existence, CBS ceased being independent of other corporations and thus until the net, from the 1980s onward we had no real independent news source in the US (And one of the reason Dan Rather had to go, he was the last remains of the days when CBS was independent of the rest of corporate America).
My point, is simple, it is in only the last ten years has we seen a return to true independent news. The US has NOT really had such independent news on the NATIONAL LEVEL since the collapse of the Chautauqua Circuit in the early 1930s. Radio, Movies and TV all reached more people then the Chautauqua Circuit ever did, but all tended to follow what Corporate America wanted people to know and accept more then informing people what people needed to know to make the best decision for themselves and the nation. Like the Chautauqua Circuit you have a lot of non-sense on the Net, but most people can see through such nonsense to get at what they need to know, if what they need to know is present. The Net provides what people need to know to off set the Corporate Propaganda of Radio, Movers and TV but it has only been around 10 years and under constant attack (Much more then Radio, Movies and TV). Thus we have to keep up the information battle, to undo almost 80 years of almost exclusive Corporate propaganda. It will take time, but we can prevail if we keep on fighting by making sure out message is out there for people to find AND to keep telling people what they need to know.

(32,723 posts)....but, for the most part, the media was pro-war until the hard hats turned. Up until then the entire anti-war movement was part of the "counter-culture" and considered to be anti-American with communist leanings. Watergate sealed the deal as people realized their President was a liar and had lied about a secret plan to get out of Vietnam just to get elected. It became HIS war. It's ending was announced by radio.
Many people thought he was too cowardly to do it on TV because people would see he was lying. It had been noted that he had an uncontrollable impulse to blink a lot when he was lying.

(13,485 posts)for the poor to look up to a rich figurehead as a demigod of sorts. Especially if they feel some sort of kinship over a social agenda like racism, religion, a common enemy. I mean, look how people flock to see a rich preacher who preaches they will get wealth if they give to god (the preacher of course) The preacher comes out with gold chains and huge diamond rings, expensive clothes... the the poor people just give everything they have to get a piece of what he's got.
It's not psychologically uncommon at all.

(4,439 posts)Sad. What do you expect? "The three-yearly OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, which compares the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds in 70 countries around the world, ranked the United States 14th out of 34 OECD countries for reading skills, 17th for science and a below-average 25th for mathematics." (see HuffPost). And the Koch brothers give money to colleges who will only hire professors who sign contracts stating they believe and will teach, exclusively, the doctrine of the GOP/Koch brothers. Do your own research if you don't believe me. This country has been resting on its laurels for far too long now. We have to get busy loosening the foothold fascism has gotten in this country or suffer the consequences.
