Chick-fil-A agrees to end anti-gay donations, mandates equal treatment of gays

Source: Chicago Phoenix

After months of negotiations with Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno over its anti-gay positions and donations, Chick-fil-A has agreed to cease donations from its non-profit charity to anti-gay organizations and issued a company-wide internal mandate calling for the equal treatment of all employees and customers.

WinShape, a non-profit funded by Chick-fil-A, has donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT organizations — some classified hate groups — including Focus on the Family, according to The Civil Rights Agenda, which worked with Moreno and company executives in an advisory capacity as they negotiated to adopt new policies. Repeated attempts to confirm the information with Chick-fil-A have been unsuccessful.

The shift could ease intense opposition from the local LGBT community and the alderman that left many pitted against the restaurant chain’s plans to open a new location in the city.

“We are very pleased with this outcome and thank Ald. Moreno for his work on this issue,” said Anthony Martinez, executive director of TCRA. “I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”

because Chick-Fil-A is, after all is said and done, a business. Profits before the people, the American way.

The accounting sheets were looking bleaker and bleaker (after the huge sales by homophobes, that is) and the corporation, as a good American corporation would always do, chose to do away with their anti-gay stance because the numbers were getting worse.

this is all I found:

The Atlanta-based chain is private and therefore doesn’t reveal its bottom line. It discloses annual sales figures, with last year’s record haul hitting $4 billion. There are 52 weeks in a year and Chick-fil-A isn’t open on Sundays. So it operates roughly 312 days of the year. Sales of $4 billion divided by 312 is about $12.8 million a day.

One can only guess how much more than $12.8 million Chick-fil-A considers “unprecedented” for sales on Aug. 1.

They made a big show of it, but ultimately you have to sell chicken every day, every week (except Sunday, I guess), and that involves selling stuff to middle class people who are increasingly annoyed that their friends, cousins, brothers, and sisters are spit on and disrespected in our society.

Being an anti-gay bully and bigot might play with some portion of the market, but you need the whole market as your potential customers.

We've been experimenting in our kitchen, and the closest we have come is marinating the chicken in pickle juice before coating it. I know it's probably six of one, half a dozen of the other, but next time we make AOTFNOTH (I call our recipe "all of the flavor, none of the hate&quot I will try putting the pickle juice straight into the batter. but the headline is that Moreno is relenting on his pledge to keep CFA out of Chicago. They do include a one sentence pledge by CFA to stop giving to "pro-family" orgs. It's a mixed bag over there. Some are calling it a defeat for CFA. Some are saying that Moreno declared victory and called the troops home.

<snip>

“Although we are encouraged by their internal statement, we still would like for the company to adopt an anti-discrimination policy at the corporate level,” said Rick Garcia, policy advisor for The Civil Rights Agenda. “It is one thing for a company to say they respect everyone they serve and employ, it is quite another for them to put that into their policies and demand that all employees adhere to that behavior. As we have heard from gay employees that work for Chick-fil-A, there is a culture of discrimination within the company and we would like to ensure that employees can speak out and call attention to those practices without fear of reprisal. It takes time to change the culture of any institution and steps like a corporate policy ensure that progress is made.”

<snip>

The apparent decision by the chain's WinShape Foundation would mark a retreat from the summer's culture war pitting advocates of marriage equality against conservative claims that the chain was under assault for simple free speech. The comments came, the group The Civil Rights Agenda said, in correspondence with a Chicago alderman who had opposed the chain's expansion to the city.

“The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas," the chain is said to have written in a letter to Alderman Proco Moreno. The Chicago group added in a press release: "In meetings the company executives clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations, such as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage."

The company did not contest the report in a statement from spokesman Steve Robinson emailed to BuzzFeed on Wednesday — though it also would not confirm the new report.

"We have no agenda, policy or position against anyone. We have a 65-year history of providing hospitality for all people and, as a dedicated family business, serving and valuing everyone regardless of their beliefs or opinions," he said in a general press statement emailed to BuzzFeed by another Chick-fil-A spokesman, Jerry Johnston, who said the company's press statement is not new. "The genuine, historical intent of our WinShape Foundation and corporate giving has been to support youth, family and educational programs."

I've seen the press release on The Civil Rights agenda website, released yesterday, but that's the only place you can find it. Chick-Fil-A will have to not only stop its anti-gay donations, but will have to make up for that by donating to gay friendly causes before I consider even walking into one of their stores. Call me cynical, but I think this probably has more to do with trying to get stores in the Chicago market than with a change of heart. That's not good enough, but it's a good first baby step.

I work in a volunteer position where we feed dinner to the high school band every Friday afternoon before the football game. We have to work within a very strict budget. The local Chic-fil-a has been all over me to buy from them. I mean really, really pushy, calling me on my cell, etc. They are pissing me off. It was this whole big guilt trip about how much they support the local high school, but we never buy anything from them (which is totally untrue). It has nothing to do with Mr. Cathey's bigoted politics, I just don't react well to that kind of pressure. Plus, they are too expensive.
