Man honored by White House for heroic actions during El Paso shooting made up his story: Police
Source: ABC News
Chris Grant was supposed to receive an honor this week from the White House for heroically distracting the gunman during last month's shooting at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart and possibly saving lives.
<snip>
Grant, who sustained bullet wounds during the shooting, gave an interview from his hospital bed in which he said he threw soda bottles at the gunman to distract him from shooting others, prompting the gunman to turn his weapon on Grant.
Chris grabbed -- listen to this -- soda bottles, and anything else in front of him, and began hurling them at the gunman, distracting him from the other shoppers and causing the shooter to turn towards Chris and fire at him, Trump said in his speech. Chris suffered two very serious gunshot wounds but he is recovering well and we wish him the best.
El Paso police have reviewed video surveillance, which they say contradicts Grant's story. But they declined to describe what action, if any, Grant took, or comment on any interaction he might have had with the gunman.

(40,220 posts)I think Chris Cuomo interviewed him. I dont get why people need to embellish things. What actually happened always comes out.

it's like: the guy's a liar but we're still going to give give him cover for his lies...we just want you to know he lied.

(5,432 posts)Somehow, one act of heroism allows people to say 'It could have been worse!'
And then, magically, the death and carnage around the 'brave act' stops being important.
People are easily fooled. In this case, though, there was video!
To paraphrase the NRA: To stop a bad guy with a gun, all it takes is a good guy with a . . . . . soda bottle?

(43,281 posts)Shot, sedated, in hospital, he may have honestly believed that he took some kind of action in response to the wonton shooting to distract, hinder the gunman, or to think his actions were the reason the gunman turned on him. I think someone in his position is trying to assert some degree of control or rationality on the irrational hatred he went through. Let's not be harsh on him. Let's try to understand first.
