Florida police officer fired after arresting pair of 6-year-olds

Source: CBS/AP

UPDATED ON: SEPTEMBER 23, 2019 / 7:20 PM / CBS/AP

Authorities say a Florida police officer has been fired and is being investigated after arresting two six-year-olds for separate incidents at their schools. CBS Orlando affiliate WKMG-TV reports that Officer Dennis Turner was previously suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation by the Orlando Police Department.

The arrests were on unrelated misdemeanor charges, authorities said. All charges against the children have since been dropped. Police clarified Monday that both of the children were 6 after initially describing one of them as 8 years old.

The department's policy requires an officer to get the approval of a watch commander before arresting anyone under age 12. WKMG-TV said that didn't happen during last Thursday's arrests.

One of the children was processed at the Juvenile Assessment Center before being released to a family member. The child's gender wasn't released, nor was the reason for the arrest. The other 6-year-old was returned to her school from the juvenile center and wasn't processed, after a transport officer found out approval wasn't obtained.

On edit:

In this space I originally posted a photo of the wrong officer. Very sorry to have managed that so poorly. Haven't had the problem before, was surprised it happened here.

Thanks for the consideration and the kindness from the poster who cautioned me. Greatly appreciated.

Incompetent cops (this includes racists) can easily be dismissed when they fail to competently exercise their duties.

WHY in the fuck are police officers in a grade school ?

NO six-year old should be put in handcuffs, stuffed in the back of a police car (Was there even an appropriate child safe seat in the patrol car ?), have "mug" shots taken and arrested. They're children, FFS, not mini-adults. They are going to act out. THEY'RE CHILDREN. That's what children do.

Their primary purpose is to foster a relationship between police and youth. They also assist in providing age appropriate education around bullying, gangs, alcohol, and drugs. Sometimes they serve as a single point of contact with various social services for students as well.

Different states and districts have differing policies on police liaison officers, but something clearly went off the rails in this case.

I almost made the same mistake when I did a Google image search. Google image has been a bit off lately. If you do an image search on a person, you can't be sure that the first result is the correct one unless it is someone famous whom you'd know for sure. Be very careful with Google image searches.

I don't know what's going on with the whole "relevance" thing for Google images but I've had to do a bit of clicking and double checking before being convinced that I had the pic of the person I was looking for.

Google Images was not "off".
MSN.com was even guilty of finding the OPD Twitter feed of the photo of the two men together and CHOSE without verification to crop the photo to show Dennis Turner as the white man.
The MSn site has been corrected (without comment) but Google Images Thumbs last forever.
As noted elsewhere, when I was confronted with the different men shown, the first thing I noticed was the hardware and stripes the white guy was wearing and thought: That ain't no resource officer....
I commend you for the relatively quick correction.
But two things.
Note how when it is discovered it was a black man...the discussion died.
And
My question:
Why did YOU when presented with two options, did you assume it just HAD to be the white guy?

For someone with only two posts you really are obnoxious and presumptuous.
My statement that Google Images was "off" wasn't based on just this one search. I've done numerous searches recently where for one reason or another I wasn't certain that the first or most prominent result was the correct one. And I was right.

I'm going to cut right to your question. What makes you so certain that I DID assume that it HAD to be the white guy? As a matter of fact, I made no such assumption. And if I had made the assumption it would only have been because after googling the name PLUS "Orlando PD" the white officers picture is the one that came up FIRST for some reason (it appears that that has now been corrected). However, I noticed immediately that there were far many MORE pictures of the black officer and that is why I double checked and then proceeded to inform the OP.

Please take you attitude somewhere else.
