EPA issues violation notice to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO The Trump administration ratcheted up its feud with California on Wednesday as the Environmental Protection Agency issued a notice accusing San Francisco of violating the federal Clean Water Act.
Last month, President Donald Trump warned of a potential violation notice, saying the city was allowing needles and human waste to go through storm drains to the Pacific Ocean an allegation fervently denied by city officials.
The violation notice came in the form of a letter to Harlan Kelly Jr., general manager of the citys Public Utilities Commission. It said the EPA had identified violations in the city and county wastewater treatment and sewer system, including lack of proper operation and maintenance that has allowed raw and partially treated sewage to flow onto beaches, into the ocean and sometimes into streets and homes.
The letter alleged that some discharges contained heavy metals and bacteria and said the city hasnt kept up proper cleaning, inspection and repair schedules for the system or properly reported or issued public warnings for sewage diversions.
Its the latest salvo in a feud between the administration and Democrat-controlled California, which has filed more than 50 lawsuits opposing Trump initiatives on the environment, immigration and healthcare. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom last week alleging that waste left by the homeless in big cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles was being improperly handled. ... San Francisco Mayor London Breed said the violation notice contains mischaracterizations, inaccuracies and falsehoods and that the citys sewer system is one of the most effective in the country.

I barely made the 12-hour limit.

(8,924 posts)Democrat-controlled?
You mean Democratic controlled, right?
Because we all know that there is no such thing as the Democrat Party.
This coming from the AP, which is supposed to be an Independent not-for-profit "news" cooperative.
I thought they were better than this.
As for the article, this is just pure vindictive punitive blow back because SF is a sanctuary city.
It will continue until TURD45 is out of office.

(57,617 posts)"Democrat-controlled" is a compound adjective. I'm looking for a site that provides a good explanation, but it's not easy. Try this:
....
General Principle 3
Most compound adjective rules are applicable only when the compound adjective precedes the term it modifies. If a compound adjective follows the term, do not use a hyphen, because relationships are sufficiently clear without one.
client-centered counseling

"Client-centered" is a compound adjective that resembles the compound adjective that the AP used. It consists of a noun (client) and and adjective (centered) that together form an adjective. This case is one that requires a hyphen. The compound adjective in the AP article similarly consists of a noun (Democrat) and an adjective (controlled). It also requires a hyphen.
I don't think the AP Stylebook is online. Your local public library might have a copy.
I used to buy up those grammar books from the 60s at yard sales. They don't show up much anymore. They're helpful to have around.

(8,924 posts)They could have straight out used "Democratic controlled"
instead of using the compound "Democrat-controlled"
Sick of hearing that word. It's meant as a pejorative.

(57,617 posts)That's an adjective modifying another adjective.
I have no beef with AP's style.

Dont let it be used against you. Use it yourself.
Its ridiculous.

(18,646 posts)The big shows have been focused on how liberalism is causing homelessness and crime in democratic led cities. In their coverage they've been desperately looking for cause & effect to further their agenda.
It's not unbelievable that Dobbs or Hannity made claims that all those syringes and "filth" from homeless minorities are making it's way into sewers. Trump no doubt saw it and told Wheeler to take action.

SAN FRANCISCO George W. Bushs legacy is at stake in more than one way this election season, with an eponymous ballot proposal on the docket in California. The San Francisco proposal seeks to rename a local sewage processing plant after the current President.
The official proposal, Prop-R on the ballot, was authorized after the Presidential Memorial Commission garnered 12,000 signatures from local residents.
Brian McConnell, co-author of the proposition, told Water & Wasterwater Treatment that President Bushs behavior in office warranted the namesake facility. In President Bushs case, we think that we will be cleaning up a substanital mess for the next ten or 20 years. The sewage treatment facilitys job is to clean up a mess, so we think its a fitting tribute.
But not everyone is amused with the proposition. Local Republicans, including Howard Epstein, chair of the San Francisco Republican Party, called the initiative an abuse of the system and loony bin direct democracy. Even some taking issue with the Bush administration have a problem with the proposition, arguing that the President doesnt deserve to have a waste treatment facility named after him.
Still many find humor in the proposition. Bright Winn, a San Francisco plumber told the San Francisco Chronicle, [Bush] has always done well for the affluent of America, and anyone that does well for the affluent should be named for the effluent.

(7,403 posts)Abusing the powers of the EPA, which Trump wants to abolish.
You will note that the EPA offers no proof to back up the claims. That is a red flag right there, making this nothing but a political statement.
