Scoop: Trump's private concerns of an impeachment legacy

Source: Axios

President Trump has told friends and allies he worries about the stain impeachment will leave on his legacy.

Driving the news: In a phone call with House Republicans on Friday, Trump articulated why he really doesn't want this. Impeachment, Trump said, is a "bad thing to have on your resume," according to a source on the call. Two other sources on the call confirmed the substance of the comment, but one said they recalled Trump phrasing it as "you don't want it [impeachment] on your resume."

After making the resume remark, Trump added, "But it's going to make Kevin speaker," these sources said, a reference to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's upside.

Why it matters: These two Trump quotes might seem like throwaways on what was a lengthy and discursive call with allies. But sources who have discussed impeachment candidly with the president say these comments perfectly encapsulate how Trump feels about it: He believes it could help him get re-elected and win back the House. But he doesn't want the history books recording Donald Trump as an impeached president.

If he honestly believes that he won't consider changing course. Expect more of the same.

Seems an impeachment would go well with six bankruptcies, two (soon to be three) divorces, hundreds of adulteries, and thousands of frauds you’v Committed.

It would complete the set.

Maybe do your job as an actual president and stop trying to enrich yourself at every turn. What a unique concept.

His fantasy that impeachment would be the only stain on an otherwise immaculate legacy is revolting. He doesn't have the capacity for honest self-reflection, or anyone around him to deliver the bad news.

you know, the ones who wound up in federal prison. Ask them how they feel about the stains on their legacies. I doubt the answers would be publishable.

There will have only been only TWO other presidents who have been impeached, and Trump would be the VERY FIRST to be impeached in the 21st Century.

He's Number One! He's Number One!

After him, it will take a LONG time to get our friends and allies abroad to fully trust us again, and to rebuild some of the long-standing alliances that he is systematically destroying.

The whole "presidency thing"...was about increasing the value of his BRAND...impeachment will tarnish the gold leaf on his brand.

It's still all about the money.

Its not like Trump ever really cared about the U.S. presidency or his place in history. It has always been about the Trump brand and that will never recover.

Can't believe he thinks he will be reelected.

Since Trump doesn't' seem to want to stop committing crimes, why shouldn't the House launch an on-going series of impeachments?

Let the Republican senators all go down as endorsing the worst of every single damn crime and behavior.
