Trump reportedly offered to sell F-35 jets to Turkey in exchange for not attacking Kurdish forces

In a phone call between President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, the US president reportedly advised Turkey not to invade northeastern Syria and offered to resume sales of the US's fifth-generation aircraft, the Lockheed Martin F-35.
Trump offered Erdogan "a really good package," in addition to other benefits and a presidential visit, a senior State Department official told the Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin.
Erdogan is still scheduled to visit the White House in November.
Trump made the decision to withdraw US troops from northeastern Syria near the Turkish border on Sunday following his call with Erdogan. Thousands of US-backed Kurds are stationed in northeastern Syria, and observers say Trump's decision has left the Kurdish fighters vulnerable to Turkish attack and may even fuel an ISIS resurgence.

Hoo boy. Though I find it amusing that he thinks other air forces want that boondoggle.

And it was also in 2018 that we stopped buying some parts from Turkey, presumably due the the same security issues.
So, now it's all hunky-dory? Or is there more to this story?

(2,769 posts)It's slightly possible that Mr. Stupid offered to sell him jets, because EVERYTHING with him is transactional.
But I think it's more likely that Erdogan wanted to tell Stupid to get U.S. troops out of the way and that his forces (which were already lined up at the Turkish border) were going in to Syria.
So Mr. "Dealmaker" just went along with the plan.
I don't think it had anything to do with the Istanbul hotel --- which is not really his --- he just puts his now-foundering name on it for royalties.
