(12,265 posts)Thankfully most of the places we go have signs saying "no firearms", one steakhouse we love lets them in and they are like "see how big my gun is", proud to be able to show they have small equipment and need a gun to feel masculine. We hardly go there at all anymore. It is a choice we make.

There really needs to be a comprehensive study of shooters to learn more about the motives, indicators and what gun laws would have the most effect.
Open carry out not doesnt seem to really have as much effect as wed like.

(811 posts)Lots of untrained imbeciles walking around with guns in their pants pockets and open purses. I hate it. There sure are a lot of Shootings at Walmarts across the country and now that they have eliminated cashiers, they corral customers into a one entrance one exit self checkout circle.

(11,523 posts)As gun violence is normalized in this country it's taking more and more carnage to get us to notice. I'm very fearful that this normalization of gun deaths in the US will keep us from ever passing meaningful gun control legislation.

(35,359 posts)Wrong demographic, wrong purpose.
If it's Asian gang violence, that reflects badly on a community and doesn't serve the rhetorical goal. And if it's "community" internal, then others are safe.
If it's somebody going after some other particular person--whether at a football game, homecoming party, or game-watch party, suddenly there's less interest. If they're after "John" then the rest of us aren't nearly at the same level of risk.
Last year a girl was shot while her mother was driving on the freeway. It was national news when they were looking for a white guy in a red pickup. When it turned into a case of a black guy who was out after a particular other black guy the story sank like a stone.
mahina
(17,701 posts)Later in your comment you say that when another shooter is found to be black and seeking a black victim, the story sank like a stone. Is it your view that stories of black criminals are under-reported?

IOW, violence against women and mass shootings are closely related, but violence against women is still not on the country's front burner.
