Three more Navy SEALs spared review after Trump's intervention
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy announced on Wednesday it would scrap plans to carry out reviews of three Navy SEALs that could have led to their ouster from the elite force, after President Donald Trumps extraordinary intervention in a related case.
I have determined that any failures in conduct, performance, judgment, or professionalism exhibited by these officers be addressed through other administrative measures as appropriate, acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said in a statement.
The decision follows Trumps order on Sunday that Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher keep his status as a Navy SEAL, even after he was convicted of battlefield misconduct. The review of the three other SEALs was connected to the Gallagher case.
Critics have said such actions would undermine military justice and send a message that battlefield atrocities will be tolerated. Trumps former Navy secretary, Richard Spencer, who was fired on Sunday over the case, said on Monday that Trumps decision would leave troops with the impression that you can get away with things.

(492 posts)You've got to earn the right to be called "Chief" in the Navy. He's an E-7, not Chief. It should read "...Special Operations E-7 Edward Gallagher...."

(492 posts)"In the Navy, there is an enormous difference between Paygrade and Rank -- and nowhere is this more true than E7/Chief. E-7 is a paygrade, anybody can be that. CHIEF is an entirely different thing, that's about respect, knowledge, authority, experience, and attitude.
Being a Chief is a very big deal in the navy. Ship can get underway without her captain, but she won't move an inch without her Chiefs.
Every Chief is an E7. But not every E7 is a Chief."

(23,373 posts)When I was in the military, way back when, it was assumed that if you are an E7, you earned that rank even before you got the formal promotion into the pay grade. Nobody is called "E-7 Smith". It is "Chief Smith", "Gunnery Sergeant Smith", "Sergeant First Class Smith", etc.
Perhaps Chief Wright has some sort of gripe to air, that there were other chiefs he didn't get along with. Or maybe he's just pissed that he retired not as Senior Chief or Master Chief.
