North Korea launches two projectiles in Thanksgiving message to Trump

Source: Washington Post

North Korea fired two projectiles Thursday, using the start of the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States to telegraph its frustration over Washington’s refusal to grant sanctions relief.

The short-range projectiles were launched from Ryonpo on the North’s east coast around 5 p.m. local time, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. They added that the projectiles, presumed to have been fired from a super-large multiple rocket launcher, traveled about 235 miles and reached an altitude of 60 miles.

“This type of act from North Korea does not help efforts to alleviate tensions on the Korean Peninsula,” the JCS said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described Pyongyang’s actions as a threat to the region and the world.

What the hell does that mean? Is NK using catapults? Are they launching "bullets"? Are they using potato cannons?

Of course they aren't. WaPo, for some reason, isn't calling a spade a spade. What NK is actually doing is launching MISSILES, not "projectiles." Maybe "projectiles" sounds less alarming and frightening. That's okay, but why is it becoming the norm when describing NK's threatening behavior? Are the missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads? Maybe WaPo can call them nuclear weapons-capable potato cannons.

Unless there's an announcement by North Korea as to purpose, that's some commentator's interpretation being passed off as objective fact without attribution to the commentator or acknowledgement that it's not actual fact. (It might be. I'm not sure what proof there'd be, however.)

At least missiles are projectiles.

As for the capabilities of the missiles, they're unknown. That they're more that tubes with rocket engines on one end and fins is more than we know. (Of course, they could have just said, "These are a specific type of missile, code named Orange Crush, nuclear capable, designed with the assistance of Russia on Syrian soil," with just as much devotion to truth as they showed in the first sentence. And, of course, everybody would accept it as fact.)

North Korea's Kim expressed 'great satisfaction' over rocket test: KCNA

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a “successful test” of a super-large multiple launch rocket system and expressed “great satisfaction,” state media said on Friday.

North Korea fired two short-range projectiles into the sea off its east coast on Thursday in what appeared to be a fresh try out of its new multiple rocket launchers following three previous tests, South Korea’s military said.

The latest test could be a Thanksgiving reminder to the United States of a year-end deadline Kim has set for Washington to show flexibility in their stalled denuclearization talks.

Pyongyang’s official KCNA news agency said Kim oversaw the latest test, as he did with previous tests in August and September. He did not attend the last one in Oct. 31.

“The volley test-fire aimed to finally examine the combat application of the super-large multiple launch rocket system proved the military and technical superiority of the weapon system and its firm reliability,” KCNA said.
