Iraq unrest: PM Abdul Mahdi to resign after bloodiest day in protests

Source: BBC

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is to submit his resignation, his office says, after more than 40 people were killed on the bloodiest day since anti-government protests began.

Mr Abdul Mahdi's decision comes after Iraq's top Shia Muslim cleric condemned the use of force against protesters and called for a new government.

Nearly 400 people have been killed in protests since the start of October.

Iraqis are demanding jobs, an end to corruption and better public services.

The Iraqi prime minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi has said he will offer his resignation to parliament to allow lawmakers to choose a new government, in a move that follows weeks of violent anti-government protests.

Abdul-Mahdi’s decision came in response to a call for a change of leadership on Friday by Iraq’s top Shia Muslim cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, his office said in a statement.

“In response to this call, and in order to facilitate it as quickly as possible, I will present to parliament a demand [to accept] my resignation from the leadership of the current government,” said the statement, signed by Abdul-Mahdi.

thanking them for killing a million while illegally invading and destroying his country, and hoping Dubya slips in the shower this holiday season while drinking and water-painting and breaks his f*cking neck, and that 5-deferment Dick's borrowed heart stops while he's on the toilet in a public restroom with explosive diarrhea.

DU took off in 2001 because of those two cowards.
