Georgia governor set to buck Trump on Senate appointment

Source: Politico

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has begun informing Republican officials he plans to appoint financial services executive Kelly Loeffler to the state’s soon-to-be vacant Senate seat, according to three people familiar with the conversations.

Members of the state’s Republican congressional delegation were among those to receive a heads-up from Kemp on his decision, according to an aide to a House Republican from Georgia who received a call from the governor over the weekend.

A spokesperson for Kemp declined to comment. Loeffler’s expected selection was first reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The choice could face serious backlash from conservatives. President Donald Trump has told Kemp he favors GOP Rep. Doug Collins, a staunch ally and the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, for the appointment. Kemp took Loeffler to the White House late last month to meet with the president. But the meeting did not go as planned: Trump raised pointed concerns about whether Loeffler — who has never run for elected office before — is seasoned enough in politics to receive the nod.

1) How insane is it that he is actually arguing that Donald Trump should pick the new senator? Since when does the POTUS get to do that?

2) I suspect that if Brian Kemp is the GOP nominee in 2028 he will strongly consider Matt Gaetz as his running-mate. The media will highlight that as proof that he is willing to reach out to people with political differences, and who he has a history of conflict with, and tout him as a new kind of leader. Or something like that.

being ignored, I somehow doubt that Loeffler will turn out to be much better.

Still, I detest Collins with intensity.

"Trump raised pointed concerns about whether Loeffler — who has never run for elected office before — is seasoned enough in politics to receive the nod."
Since he himself had never run for elected office, and is clearly unqualified for the one he now holds...

4. I admit I'm surprised; Loeffler is not the typical Republican in GA.

Makes me wonder why kemp is so high on her. Kemp himself won by being the "tough guy" RW candidate over the others. Cagle was looked at as being prt of the "swamp", even though he was on the right of every issue.

5. There are valid reasons for referring to him as KKKemp, but this is a welcome surprise.

He is also pushing an expansion of Medicaid that wasn't expected, although he is asking for waivers from some requirements in the ACA.

But until both are official, I remain suspect.
