William Barr Says Those Who Don't Show More Respect To Cops May Not Get Police Protection

The remarks are the latest example of the U.S. attorney generals tough on crime approach that President Donald Trump has adopted.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr said Tuesday that if some communities dont begin showing more respect to law enforcement, then they could potentially not be protected by police officers.
The countrys top cop made the questionable remarks while giving a speech at the Attorney Generals Award for Distinguished Service in Policing.
But I think today, American people have to focus on something else, which is the sacrifice and the service that is given by our law enforcement officers, Barr said. And they have to start showing, more than they do, the respect and support that law enforcement deserves ― and if communities dont give that support and respect, they might find themselves without the police protection they need.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to HuffPosts request for clarification on who specifically Barr was referring to when he mentioned communities and what he meant by people finding themselves without police protection.

(1,639 posts)--it's submission. Meanwhile, many police departments harbor cops who run side hustles shaking down folks who can afford to pay up to avoid being locked up.
True respect is a two way street. When people are treated with essential dignity and respect, they know it, and usually communicate that same attitude back.

(58,662 posts)They "protect" wealthy, up-scale neighborhoods while poorer neighborhoods populated by POC are lucky to get an occasional patrol through their streets. When something does happen, it's "call 9-1-1 and wait for help."
Hell, I'm a pasty old white guy and I know how that works.

(7,403 posts)To call Barr an idiot would be an insult to idiots. Many communities would welcome a little less of that police protection Barr is talking about. Just ask the parents of Mike Brown, for instance. The same would apply to the Hispanic community and their relationship with ICE as they rip families apart. And it doesn't end there either. Just ask the black family that lives in fear of the knock on the door from CPS as they rip children away from their parent(s). That is a broad swath of people living in constant fear of this "protection". It is simply not natural to respect the oppressor - and make no mistake, that is what is happening. Police "protection" is very different depending on the race of those being "protected". Respect can only come when the nature of policing changes. We know that community policing works so why did we abandon community policing? It certainly was a political decision rather than a policing decision. Barr knows how his message will be received and that was the whole point. He wants the racial divide to remain and nothing like playing the fear card to assure that will be the case. Barr is the problem, not the solution. Barr must go - along with all of those that are like minded.

That's what he, drumpf, Murdoch, PUtin, Erdogan, Xi, Bolsonaro, Johnson and others want and are seriously trying to implement.

It's easy to demand respect when you are carrying a gun.
That doesn't mean people have to respect you.
Respect is something you have to earn, and until the police stop covering for the rotten apples among them they do not deserve our respect.
It's their job to protect everyone, no matter how respectful or disrespectful the people they encounter are. If they don't do that it stinks of corruption.
