Takata airbag fault forces recall of another 1.4 million vehicles
Source: CNN
Hong Kong (CNN Business)Faulty Takata airbags have already caused the largest auto recall in history, with tens of millions of cars affected. Now a newly discovered defect has prompted the recall of another 1.4 million vehicles.
These cars were recalled on Wednesday, authorities in the United States said.
As with the wider ongoing recall, the new fault can cause airbag inflators to explode, under-inflate or spew out shrapnel at passengers, raising the risk of serious injury or death, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The airbags involved in the latest recall were found to have "a manufacturing issue," and were fitted to "some brands of 1995-2000 vehicles," the agency said in a notice posted on its website. It gave no further details.

(16,616 posts)Takata produced and sold around 4.5 million of the airbags with the new fault globally in the late 1990s, but only a fraction of the vehicles fitted with them are likely still being driven, according to government documents.
Some of us are still driving "some brands of 1995-2000 vehicles" so I hope they don't assume they don't need to keep us informed about which models are affected.

The Danger of Alpha Air Bags: Certain 2001-2003 Honda and Acura vehicles, 2006 Ford Ranger, and Mazda B-Series trucks are at a far higher risk for an air bag explosion that could injure or kill vehicle occupants. These are referred to as Alpha air bags. These vehicles can and should be repaired immediately. Do not drive these vehicles with Takata air bags unless you are going straight to a dealer to have them repaired immediately.
Additional Vehicles Will Be Recalled: Additional air bags are scheduled to be recalled by December 2019, bringing the total number of affected air bags to around 65-70 million. These vehicles do not currently appear affected by this recall using a VIN search. Sign up for Recall Alerts and make sure the address on your registration is current to be sure youre notified of this or any other future recall.
and...
NHTSA also recommends that you use the VIN Look-up Tool at least twice a year to see if your vehicle is under any safety recall. Please note that vehicles that have not yet been recalled, but are scheduled to be recalled in the future under NHTSAs Consent Order with Takata, will not be searchable until they are actually recalled this is an example of why it is so important to check for recalls twice each year.

These guys are nuts if they think a significant number of Americans will go through that song and dance even once.....
In addition, people who enter their VINs and email address into that database will place themselves at risk for additional data thief in the case of a hack, all due to a company's carelessness in their designs.

(10,749 posts)One of my vehicles has been recalled for the driver side airbag. The passenger side airbag recall is pending, mainly, according to the dealer, because replacement air bags are not yet available.
So. . . I have to go twice. The dealer is an hour from my house, so that's a 2-hour drive, and the work takes 90 minutes. So there's half a day gone. Multiply that by the millions of vehicles recalled, and the cost to the economy is vast, and for people who work for someone else, it's sick time or vacation time down the tubes.
And I'll bet it was to save a buck or two on the air bags when first sold/installed.
The world is broken, and no one seems to care all that much.
