Greta Thunberg is Time's 2019 Person of the Year

Source: NBC News

Greta Thunberg, the soft-spoken Swedish teen who became a global conscience for climate change and environmental activism, has been named Time’s Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019.

The magazine announced 16-year old Thunberg as its choice Wednesday exclusively on "TODAY."

"She became the biggest voice on the biggest issue facing the planet this year, coming from essentially nowhere to lead a worldwide movement," Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal told "TODAY," adding that Thunberg is the magazine's youngest choice ever to be named Person of the Year.

Thunberg quickly bloomed into one of the world's most notable and youngest climate change activists, sparking a collective movement to fight climate change after protesting alone outside the Swedish parliament during school hours on Fridays when she was 15. The teen held up a now universally recognized hand-painted sign that read “skolstrejk för klimatet,” which translates to “School strike for the Climate.”

So glad they made an aspirational choice about someone who is working hard as she can to change our future for the better.

What Trump as usual does not understand is that this selection is not necessarily a praise:
"TIME's Person of the Year is bestowed by the editors on the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year."

This tiny girl has carried her position with grace.

and certainly the OP qualifies for this and the other LBN rules.

As the message box says when one begins a post in LBN :

Thousands of people use the DU Latest Breaking News Forum as their primary source for news

In other words, most of us don't have the luxury of all the time in the world to read through all of Latest Threads or a hundred different forums, so we rely on LBN and its many volunteer posters and hosts, to provide a forum for this purpose.

Edited to Add: I agree in general though -- before I start an OP post in a non-LBN forum, and I think there's a good chance that others may have already posted -- I do a quick search. If I do find other postings on the subject, I ask myself do we really need another thread on it? . (And of course LBN rules forbid posting an OP that is a "duplicate" of another earlier LBN post)

“I still believe the biggest danger is not inaction, the real danger is when politicians and CEOs are making it look like real action is happening when in fact almost nothing is being done apart from clever accounting and creative PR.” - Thunberg

The Hill

The president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., attacked Time magazine on Wednesday over its choice of climate change activist Greta Thunberg as its 2019 "Person of the Year."

In a tweet, Trump Jr. mocked the 16-year-old activist as "a teen being used as a marketing gimmick," saying pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong deserved the honor.
