Government extends open enrollment for ACA health plans, but only for 36 hours (Dec 18, 3 AM ET)

Sunday was supposed to be the final deadline to enroll in health coverage for 2020 on Healthcare.gov, the federal marketplace for buying individual health insurance. But website glitches -- that may have caused enrollment problems -- prompted an outcry, and the government restarted enrollment Monday.
The new deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 3 a.m. ET. Consumers who already have an account can shop for plans and find out if they qualify for subsidies to lower the costs of plans at Healthcare.gov. (Twelve states and D.C. have their own health insurance exchanges -- and their enrollment deadlines vary.)
The person who appears to have flagged the technical issue first was Joshua Peck. He worked on Healthcare.gov outreach at the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services under President Obama. In 2017, when the Trump Administration slashed the outreach and advertising budget for Healthcare.gov, Peck founded the nonprofit Get America Covered to do some of that work outside of the government.
"On Sunday, I received an alert that told me that there may be an issue on the site," Peck says. He went to the log-in page and got an error message. "It didn't tell people the system was having a problem, it didn't tell people to wait on the site and try again," he says. "It was incredibly confusing."

The rest of the article is interesting about how the technical glitches on Dec 15 blew up into a big story, amplified by 3 unnamed (by me) but very prominent Democratic Party candidates (named in the article).
At 843 pm ET Dec 16, I posted just above an article from https://money.yahoo.com/aca-open-enrollment-deadline-231539458.html that said (and still says as I type this at 242 am ET Dec 17) that the deadline has been extended until 3 PM (that's PEE EM) Dec 18. Well then I ran across the above NPR article which I'm posting because it's more accurate and much more interesting and informative. It says the deadline is 3 AM (that's AAA EM) Dec 18. This also agrees with the CMS Statement below and the healthcare.gov statement below (which I had posted before but had not noticed the AM thingy, sigh)
CMS Statement on Health Insurance Exchange Open Enrollment Extension

I also bent the LBN rules by adding " (Dec 18 3 AM ET) " to the title - given that what was initially posted was wrong so as to give it more visibility. I'd hate to see people who read the earlier version with the 3 pm deadline to not see this change of deadline, arghh. LBN practice has been to allow small modifications to the title when needed for clarity, e.g. "Legislature passes ground-breaking reproductive justice law (IL)" where the (IL) is added to the original title because it came from a local paper while the international audience that DU is would have no idea which legislature without plowing into the body of the article. (I made up this example entirely, I have no idea what Illinois has passed).
The old link ( https://money.yahoo.com/aca-open-enrollment-deadline-231539458.html ) has a picture of a ACA navigator with a big "Obamacare" on the back of his t-shirt, plus about 4 common questions, all in Spanish. Its interesting to me the "Obamacare" rather than "Affordable Care Act" or somesuch.

Wed Dec 18 (as your Healthcare.gov graphic says), so yeah people gotta get it done Monday or Tuesday.
That article that I posted originally with the 3 pm deadline is still wrong as I type this ( https://money.yahoo.com/aca-open-enrollment-deadline-231539458.html )

(25,983 posts)Getting the site to load wasn't the problem - at least not at first. I was lucky I didn't wait until late in the day, still, out of nowhere there was a popup that got in the way after about 3 pm. It blocked the login page access with an ad that said, "call this number and you can still get coverage even if you don't sign in today" instead of just letting me read it and move on. Perhaps this was a stopgap to keep traffic from bringing the site down entirely?
With some patience I managed to get around it to sign in again and finish my dental renewal. I got it done but I imagine a lot of people had to give up.
If you call the number and record your info, they do put you in line and will call you back to see that you get covered. Glad to hear there's an extension anyway.

(10,920 posts)complete the ACA enrollment and getting stuck might be notified by other means, but I thought, what the heck I'll post it anyway.
I've been on Medicare since late 2016, but I sure remember the ACA exchanges in 2014 and 2015 (for me, Minnesota's MNSURE) and how no matter how early one started, it was a battle to get it done. (The first year I wasn't enrolled until the following March, or was it May, because of glitches and people not calling back, I had to get my state rep involved).

(19,568 posts)I was able to sign up, but wasn't able to pick a different policy and was auto enrolled in a semi match to my old one, except it's not even close and costs twice as much. I couldn't shop for different policies because they wouldn't load.
FWIW my issues happened on the 12th, not the last day.

(51,635 posts)This year I waited until Dec 3. The guy who helped me told me that most insur companies have increased their rates 20% or more. The COLA and inflation os no where near that. Fuck insur companies! I bet they are trying to squeeze every cent out of people while they can before Medicare For All finally helps people and not rich guys' bank accounts.

Thanks for posting this info. I wish I knew it a month ago, but on second thought, what good would that do? I heard that the ACA was going down, then I heard that in CA the rates were increasing 12.5%. When I heard 20% I was surprised and really, really REALLY pissed off! I have Blue Shield and thought it was just this plan but the guy was honest and said, "Nope, most of them have". I am glad I don't have his job.

(10,920 posts)Here's where I found it ... a BusinessInsider article posted on news.yahoo.com
(Yes, rather obscure, I've run across no other mentions of this)
A growing number Republicans are satisfied with the cost of healthcare in the United States, according to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday.
The increase comes as another major index from the Labor Department showed average insurance prices spiking 20% over the last year ( https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.t02.htm ).
The poll noted overall satisfaction with US healthcare costs is the highest since 2009 as just over one in four Americans are content with the healthcare pricing environment though much of that boost was driven by the uptick in Republican approval.
It suggests that heightened partisanship is swaying Republicans on healthcare just as it has been on the economy, another issue where they are much likelier than Democrats to view the situation more favorably, the Pew Research Center said.

(51,635 posts)Sick and tired of this country where it is more affordable to just drop dead. No wonder suicides increase as more people can't afford to live while their health is at risk. Meanwhile, I am supposed to be grateful that I have any insur since I have a pre-existing condition. That is so ass backwards. Like you said...Bizarro World.

(10,920 posts)and a couple years ago they changed the deadline from Jan 31 to Dec 15 IIRC, thanks in part at least to T.F.M. (the fucking moron), so I suspect they've also been cutting healthcare.gov's budget meaning fewer tech support types around to keep things running smoothly. Just a guess.

By AUDREY CARLSEN and HAEYOUN PARK

...
1. Redirecting promotional funding
Instead of using its outreach budget to promote the Affordable Care Act, the department made videos critical of the law.
In June, the health department posted 23 video testimonials on YouTube from people who said they had been burdened by Obamacare, including families, health care professionals and small business owners. ...
2. Attacking the law
In addition to the YouTube videos, the department has used Twitter and news releases to try to discredit the health law. Since being sworn in as health secretary on February 10, Tom Price has posted on Twitter 48 infographics advocating against Obamacare, all of which bear the health departments logo.
Here, its an agency trying to destroy its own program because it opposes it, said Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University who is an expert on government ethics. It is inconsistent with the constitutional duty to take care that the law is faithfully executed. ...
3. Deleting information online
The department removed useful guidance for consumers about the Affordable Care Act from its website.
Under the Obama administration, the health departments website contained information to help consumers learn about the Affordable Care Act and how to obtain coverage through the health insurance marketplaces. Much of that information is now gone. Some was removed within hours of President Trumps inauguration. ...
