European Parliament Slams 'LGBTI-Free' Zones In Poland

Some 80 local governments in Poland have issued resolutions creating zones forbidding tolerance of sexual minorities. The European Parliament also accused municipalities of withholding funds for rights organizations.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Wednesday condemning so-called "LGBTI-free" zones in Poland. Most of these zones — where local authorities pledge to refrain from acts that encourage tolerance — were decreed in non-binding directives from local governments. Municipalities must also avoid providing financial assistance to NGOs working to promote equal rights.

"The European Parliament urges Polish authorities to condemn these acts and to revoke all resolutions attacking LGBTI rights," the legislature said in a statement. Poland's Commissioner for Human Rights Adam Bodnar has received several complaints against these municipal zones, which total at least 80 in towns across Poland.

The European Parliament resolution also notes its concern for the discrimination LGBTI people face at the hands of national governments of member states. EU funds "must not be used for discriminatory purposes," their statement noted...

And for the record, I’ve not ever been discriminated against for speaking English there. Nor has anyone verbally or physically assaulted me for speaking English.

they must also be in French, and the French sign has to be larger than the English sign.

reading about this I think. In Italy thugs are writing graffiti or posting signs at public parks on benches, bathroom doors, etc. 'Jew-free, Black-free' maybe harking back to the earlier ugly fascist era of Mussolini and Hitler. I couldn't believe when I read it.

DW, 'Homophobia Is Still Deeply Entrenched In Poland.' ..Even so, LGBT people are frequently insulted and attacked. Dehnel tell DW
> that "local lawmakers keep proclaiming that certain parts of Poland are now LGBT-free – just like areas were once declared Jew-free." The writer says this is extremely hurtful, even for those with particularly thick skin. Dehnel therefore urges LGBT to support each other, and to publicly come out.

At last week's first ever Pride Parade in the Polish town of Bialystok, Dehnel witnessed how deep-rooted and virulent anti-LGBT sentiments still are. Polish nationalists and hooligans insulted and spat at the protesters. They hurled rotten eggs, fireworks, stones and even urine-filled bottles at them.

On his Facebook page, the author described the scenes unfolding before his eyes: "We can see how about 10 meters away a group is being attacked by thugs. A tall man wearing a red balaclava covering his entire head is kicking people, including teenage girls. Some run away, and other angry 'knights' show up....https://www.dw.com/en/homophobia-in-poland-still-deeply-entrenched/a-49720087

Polemical t-shirts are fun to wear, but their inherent idea-fixe is little more than a middle finger to critical thought.

came to London from Africa in the 1960s, rental housing had signs saying 'No Irish, Jews, Blacks or Dogs.'

When Mom drove to Calif. in the 1940s there were signs at places along the way, 'No Indians, Mexicans or Dogs.'

In other words, regarding humans nothing much is new.

I would think after what they have gone through they would be a little more tolerant. This is sick.

in Eastern Europe. The Holocaust was not that long ago. You would think they would not have such a short memory. It's sad. We aren't much better, unfortunately.

She NEVER wanted to see Poland again after the war was done, and she NEVER wanted to see another non-Jewish Pole. I was only a teenager when she died, but I gathered she found the Poles themselves anti-semitic quite apart from the Germans.

The Poles have had an ugly history with the Catholic Church in Poland sanctioning some vile things.
