Illinois sees first legal sales of recreational marijuana

Source: Los Angeles Times

CHICAGO — The sale of marijuana for recreational purposes became legal Wednesday in Illinois — prompting many to begin lining up hours early at dispensaries.

About 500 people were outside Dispensary 33 in Chicago. Renzo Mejia made the first legal purchase in the shop shortly after 6 a.m., the earliest that Illinois’ new law allowed such sales.

“To be able to have [recreational marijuana] here is just mind-boggling,” Mejia told the Chicago Sun-Times after buying an eighth of an ounce called “Motorbreath.”

Illinois already allowed medical marijuana, but it is now the 11th state to allow its use and sale for recreational purposes. The law approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature and signed by Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker allows people 21 or older to possess up to 30 grams (1.06 ounces) of cannabis flower and up to 5 grams (0.17 ounces) of cannabis concentrate.'

A couple decades ago, Wisconsin had a policy where people could buy booze at the age of 18.

Meanwhile, Illinois had a policy of people could buy booze at only 21.

So we had a "blood border" with 18-21 year olds bought booze in Wisconsin, who lived in Illinois.

I have a hunch it'll be reversed.

Wisconsin people will buy pot in Illinois, and there Wisconsin people will buy pot and get into car accidents.

6. One difference here is that you have to be 21

It doesn't matter if you are from Illinois or out of state, you still have to be 21 to buy cannabis. Out of state people are only able to buy half the amount Illinois residents can buy.

What is more likely to happen is that you will get cross border mules buying in Illinois and selling in border states. It will become big business to transport weed to Wisconsin and relatively easy.

Likely so those corporations can keep the surging profits and not state governments.

legal here.

At a federal level, I believe you're correct, but at a state level, they didn't seem to have much impact.

They'll see a different color green. They'll look at the states that already legalized it, see that Reefer Madness anarchy in the streets isn't happening, and want their own share of that sweet sweet tax money.

I hope every state does what Illinois did and pardon/expunge records of people with past weed convictions. Release everyone that's in prison for it. Make sure the Black communities that have been disproportionately affected by racist policing on this issue have a place at the front of the line to start up legal businesses.
